Roade Rapist
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Roade and the surrounding areas, a 64-year-old man named David Bland was found guilty of heinous sexual offenses involving a young child and possession of a vast collection of child abuse images. The incident came to light on June 5, when police were called to a scene in a neighbor's garden after the mother of a two-year-old girl discovered Bland in the act of assaulting her child.
According to court reports, the mother was in her back garden when she noticed Bland, who was in the neighboring yard, with his hands extended towards her daughter, who was lying across his arms. She observed that Bland's trousers and underwear had been pulled down, and his face was mere inches from her child's bottom. The mother’s quick reaction led to Bland's immediate arrest by law enforcement officers.
During the subsequent investigation, police searched Bland’s residence in Grafton Road, Roade. The officers uncovered a disturbing collection of over 500 DVDs and videos, which, upon examination, revealed approximately 450 images of child sexual abuse, including content involving torture and bestiality. In addition to the digital material, authorities found children's clothing, underwear, bondage gear, and inflatable dolls, indicating a pattern of deviant interests and activities.
Bland was taken into custody and later admitted to possessing the images and having sexual fantasies involving children. His criminal history includes an 18-month suspended sentence in 1992 for the rape and sexual assault of an eight-year-old boy. The current case further demonstrated his ongoing dangerousness and sexual proclivities.
At Northampton Crown Court, Caroline Allison, prosecuting, detailed the severity of the offense, stating, “Her daughter was playing in the back garden, when her mother saw the defendant in the next door neighbour’s garden with his hands out in front of him and her daughter lying across his arms. She saw that her trousers and pants had been pulled down and the defendant’s face was a couple of inches from her bottom.”
Judge Thomas Corrie sentenced Bland to four years in prison, with an extended license period until 2017. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was issued a sexual offences prevention order. This order prohibits him from having any contact with individuals under 16 and restricts his proximity to schools, parks, and playgrounds within a 50-meter radius.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Corrie described Bland as “rather isolated, of limited abilities but with very definite sexual proclivities,” emphasizing that Bland’s history and recent offenses confirm he remains a significant danger to the public, especially children and their families. The judge underscored the gravity of the threat Bland poses, stating, “You are to be regarded as dangerous and you pose a significant risk to members of the public, that’s to say, children and their parents.”
Tony Davis, representing Bland, acknowledged his client’s struggles, saying, “What he accepts is he has sexual proclivities which he finds difficult, in fact almost impossible to control. I suspect he has no ability to restrain these sexual fantasies as evidenced from the sexual assault of this young girl and the viewing of the images.”
Overall, the case highlights the ongoing dangers posed by individuals with such deviant interests and the importance of vigilant law enforcement and community awareness to protect vulnerable members of society.
