DAVID AMOS AND SHOCKING SEXUAL GROOMING IN DURHAM

A former teacher from Durham has been sentenced to prison after engaging in disturbing sexual misconduct and grooming a teenage girl during the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The individual, identified as David Amos, used digital platforms to conduct a sinister campaign of sexualized communication with a vulnerable minor, exploiting the emotional and social isolation caused by lockdown measures.

The incident came to light during the hearing at Teesside Crown Court, where it was revealed that Amos, aged 30, was initially tasked with maintaining contact with a student from County Durham.

Instead of fulfilling his professional duties, he diverted his efforts into a series of deeply inappropriate and predatory exchanges that spanned several weeks.

These exchanges reportedly began on Snapchat, a social media app popular among teenagers, before extending to other messaging services including Skype.

Prosecutor Richard Bennett outlined the extent of Amos’s malicious behavior, stating that he coerced the teenage girl into sending explicit images, including one of her bare bottom.

This followed Amos’s own conduct where he shared graphic images of himself, including over 700 messages in total.

These messages included explicit offers, like proposing to whip her with his tie, and attempts to persuade her to meet him in a wooded area for photographic purposes.

The court was shown evidence of the troubling escalation in their communications, which became increasingly sexualized over time.

The communication between Amos and the girl involved graphic selfies and exchanges—he sent a picture of himself masturbating, while she sent a nude photograph of herself.

The conversations persisted even after a brief pause, with Amos reestablishing contact around August.

During this renewed communication, he solicited sexual activities from the minor, although she expressed reluctance, citing that it would be inappropriate given the fact he was her teacher.

The prosecutor described this pattern as grooming, noting that such behavior was sustained over a lengthy period.

Amos, residing on Lumley Road in Durham, pleaded guilty to charges of causing a child to watch sexual activity and causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

His defense lawyer, Amrit Jandoo, acknowledged his client’s struggles during the lockdown period, including a broken relationship, but emphasized that not all his messages were of a sexual nature.

Jandoo insisted that Amos had attempted to support the girl at times and carried out some of his responsibilities appropriately.

Despite this, Judge Chris Smith was far from forgiving in his verdict.

He sentenced Amos to 30 months in prison, emphasizing the gravity of his breach of trust.

The judge highlighted that Amos’s sexualized conduct began soon after the initial contact on Snapchat, including the sending of a masturbation video.

He condemned the defendant’s manipulation and coercion, stating that these actions demonstrated a gross betrayal of his role as a teacher and as a trusted adult.

In addition to the custodial sentence, Amos was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was subjected to a ten-year sexual harm prevention order.

The court’s verdict underscores the serious nature of online grooming cases and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable minors from exploitation and abuse.
