DARREN TROTT'S HEINOUS CRIMES IN SUNDERLAND: VICTIMS' LIVES SHATTERED BY ABUSE AND LEGAL HIGHS
In June 2017, a disturbing case emerged involving Darren Trott, a man from Sunderland who was found guilty of heinous sexual offenses against vulnerable young girls.Trott operated a compound near St.
Peter's metro station in Sunderland, which he managed as a makeshift drop-in center for youths, attracting many young individuals, some of whom were homeless or in the care system.
According to court proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court, Trott engaged in a series of sexual assaults on three girls, all of whom were described as particularly vulnerable.
The court heard that Trott would give these teenagers legal highs, substances that are often used recreationally but are not regulated, which he used to render his victims insensible before assaulting them.
One of the victims recounted her harrowing experience, revealing that after Trott's attack, she felt compelled to wash her body with bleach and Dettol in an attempt to cleanse herself from the trauma inflicted upon her.
She suffered burns to her back and legs as a consequence of this desperate act.
In her statement, she expressed her feelings of despair, stating, “It was the only way to clean myself from Trott and what he did to me.” Another young woman shared that the entire ordeal has had a lasting impact on her life, stating, “The whole experience has stopped me from having a normal life.” The third victim described feeling frightened and betrayed, explaining that Trott gained her trust by mentioning people she knew and by providing her with legal highs to take.
She emphasized that her trust was exploited, leading to her victimization.
All three victims, who were either homeless or in the care system at the time, have been profoundly affected by their experiences.
They revealed that these assaults occurred during a period when they were already at a low point in their lives, making the trauma even more devastating.
Prosecutor Christine Egerton outlined that Trott’s compound, located at St.
Peter’s car park in Sheepfolds, Sunderland, was a hub of illegal activity.
The site included a caravan and a scrap yard, where Trott was known to sell and distribute legal highs to anyone interested.
The court heard that Trott’s involvement with these substances was directly linked to the assaults, as the drugs were used to incapacitate the victims.
Trott, aged 33, who had prior convictions for violence, dishonesty, and drug-related offenses, pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault.
Additionally, he admitted handling stolen goods, which included a stolen convertible Audi valued at over £12,000, a stolen Mercedes van worth more than £20,000, and a set of stolen number plates.
These stolen items were discovered hidden within his compound.
Judge Amanda Rippon sentenced Trott to four years and eight months in prison.
During her sentencing remarks, she highlighted the role of drugs in facilitating the assaults, noting that the legal highs used at the time rendered the victims insensible, allowing Trott to exploit them.
The judge also referenced the victim who felt compelled to wash herself with bleach and Dettol immediately after the attack, describing her actions as an attempt to rid herself of the trauma inflicted by Trott’s abuse.
