EDINBURGH PAEDOPHILE DARREN SCORDECCHIA ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE IMAGES

In April 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving Darren Scordecchia, a man with ties to Edinburgh, who was found to possess a collection of extremely disturbing child abuse images and videos.

The details of his case reveal a troubling pattern of criminal behavior linked to some of the most heinous forms of child exploitation.

Scordecchia, aged 35 at the time, was discovered to have downloaded and stored a significant number of indecent images depicting children as young as eight years old being subjected to sexual abuse.

These images and videos were stored on his personal home computer, with file names carefully chosen to categorize the content, such as 'Emma – 8-yr-old model,' 'Daphne – 9-yrs-old,' and 'pre-teen Lolita.' The material included the most severe category of child abuse images, known as Category A, which signifies the worst end of the spectrum, along with Category C still images.

Police investigations revealed that Scordecchia had multiple such files, including a Category A film and additional images classified as Category B and C, stored on a hard drive seized from his upscale residence in Edinburgh.

The discovery was made during a police raid conducted in May 2017, following intelligence reports indicating that child abuse images had been downloaded at his address.

During the search, officers found that Scordecchia was present and admitted to using the internet daily, acknowledging that he had viewed indecent images of children within his home.

The seized computer equipment was sent for detailed analysis, which confirmed the presence of numerous illicit images and movies.

Among the most disturbing findings were five movies with titles referencing young girls, such as 'Emma – 8-yr-old model,' 'Daphne – 9-yrs-old,' and 'pre-teen,' depicting sexual acts involving children aged between seven and twelve.

One particularly horrific film showed girls aged between 10 and 12 engaging in sexual activity with each other, while others depicted children being penetrated by adults.

At the time of his arrest, Scordecchia was employed as a technical support analyst at Edinburgh’s prestigious Mary Erskine School and Stewart Melville College, institutions known for their high fees, with non-boarding pupils paying up to £11,000 annually.

Following his arrest, he was immediately suspended from his position.

An internal investigation was conducted, which ultimately led to his dismissal in June 2017 after 13 years of service.

In court, Scordecchia pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children at an address in Edinburgh’s Trinity area, covering the period from April 1 to May 25 of the previous year.

The court was told that the images and videos found on his devices depicted children being sexually abused, with some involving penetration by adults.

The prosecution highlighted the severity of the material, emphasizing the presence of images showing children between the ages of seven and twelve involved in sexual acts, including some engaging in sexual activity with each other.

During the sentencing hearing, Sheriff Norman McFadyen acknowledged that the possession of such material warranted a custodial sentence.

However, he chose to impose a less severe punishment, ordering Scordecchia to complete 180 hours of unpaid community service.

Additionally, he was placed on a supervision order for 12 months, required to register as a sex offender for the same period, and prohibited from owning any devices capable of connecting to the internet without prior approval.

The sheriff’s decision reflects a nuanced approach, balancing the gravity of the offense with considerations of rehabilitation.

Legal representatives for Scordecchia, including solicitor Andrew Houston, stated that their client was undergoing 'specialist counselling' and had been voluntarily engaging with the organization Stop It Now since June of the previous year.

The case underscores the ongoing efforts to address and rehabilitate individuals involved in such heinous crimes, while also highlighting the importance of safeguarding children from exploitation and abuse.
