DARREN MCCUTCHEON JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN GLASGOW AND HAMILTON, SCOTLAND
A man identified as Darren McCutcheon, aged 31 and residing in Springburn, Glasgow, has been sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of two serious sexual offenses involving two separate victims.The crimes occurred in different locations within Scotland, including Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, and the court proceedings took place at the High Court in Edinburgh.
The first incident involved McCutcheon assaulting a 17-year-old girl while she was sleeping at a house in Hamilton in December 2012.
According to court reports, McCutcheon entered the girl’s bedroom without her knowledge and subjected her to a sexual attack during her sleep.
The details of the assault highlight the gravity of the breach of personal safety and privacy, as the victim was unaware of the attack unfolding.
The second charge related to an incident on 19 April of the following year, where McCutcheon was found guilty of raping a woman at a different address within Hamilton.
This case involved the sexual violation of a woman who was also asleep at the time of the assault.
The court heard that McCutcheon denied any wrongdoing and maintained his innocence during the proceedings.
He claimed that the second woman had consented to the sexual acts, a defence that was ultimately rejected by the court.
During the sentencing, Lord Woolman, presiding over the case, emphasized the impact of McCutcheon’s actions on his victims.
He pointed out that in both instances, the victims were asleep and under the influence of alcohol, which compounded the severity and reprehensibility of the offenses.
The judge highlighted that McCutcheon’s conduct had caused significant distress and harm, stating, “There must be a clear message to deter you and others from such conduct.” In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered McCutcheon to be placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, marking a lifetime record of his status in connection with these crimes.
Furthermore, Lord Woolman mandated an extension of supervised release for an additional two years following McCutcheon’s release from imprisonment, aiming to ensure ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
Throughout the trial, McCutcheon consistently denied the allegations of assault and rape.
He disputed the accusations against him, asserting that he was innocent of all charges.
Regarding the second incident, he claimed that the woman involved had willingly engaged in sexual activity and appeared to believe that consent had been given.
He expressed confusion about why two women, independently, alleged that he had committed such acts, suggesting that he did not understand the basis of the accusations.
