DARREN HEYWOOD FROM STOCKTON-ON-TEES SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN DURHAM AND TEESSIDE
In a series of disturbing incidents, Darren Heywood, a resident of Stockton-on-Tees, has been convicted and sentenced for multiple sexual offenses involving minors. His criminal activities span over several years and include attempts to meet underage girls for sexual purposes, as well as actual sexual assaults.
In April 2018, Heywood was initially jailed for 16 months after being caught by the online paedophile hunters known as Guardians of the North.
The group had set up a fake profile to lure individuals seeking to engage in sexual conversations with minors.
Heywood, then 47 years old, traveled from his home in Stockton to Seaham, County Durham, believing he was meeting a 13-year-old girl he had been communicating with online.
Instead, he was confronted by members of the vigilante group, who detained him and handed him over to police authorities.
Following his release from prison, Heywood was swiftly re-arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a young girl of primary school age.
His trial at Teesside Crown Court was scheduled for last month, during which he admitted to sexually touching the girl.
The court heard that his actions had a profound and lasting impact on the victim, who now suffers from emotional distress, often crying at night and experiencing intrusive memories of her attacker.
The judge, Sean Morris, described Heywood’s conduct as “disgraceful” and emphasized the harm caused to the young girl, noting her reclusive behavior as a consequence of the assault.
During the proceedings, Heywood, formerly residing on Azalia Street in Stockton, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault.
As part of his sentence, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was subjected to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
This order restricts his access to computers and the internet and prohibits any contact with girls under the age of 16.
Robin Denny, representing the defense, pointed out that Heywood’s late guilty plea spared the young victim from having to testify in court, though this did not mitigate the severity of his actions.
Earlier in April 2018, Heywood’s previous conviction was linked to his prior attempt to meet a minor.
He had been caught by Guardians of the North in 2016 after engaging in online conversations with a fake profile, which he believed belonged to a 13-year-old girl.
He traveled from Stockton to Seaham, intending to meet her, but was intercepted by the vigilante group.
During the encounter, Heywood attempted to escape by climbing over railway tracks but was quickly detained and arrested.
He admitted to attempting to meet a child following grooming and was sentenced to 16 months in prison at Durham Crown Court.
More recently, Heywood faced new charges related to the sexual abuse of a real girl under 13.
He was accused of touching her sexually on two occasions over a 12-month period.
He admitted to these charges, although a third charge of serious sexual assault was left on file.
Court records indicated that his address was listed as Holme House Road, Stockton, but earlier reports suggested he was residing in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.
A pre-sentence report was scheduled to be prepared by the probation service, with sentencing set for May 11.
He was granted conditional bail until then.
In a separate incident from 2017, Heywood, then 46, was jailed after attempting to meet a girl he believed to be 13 for sex.
He had contacted a Facebook profile named ‘Becka Johnson,’ which was actually created by Guardians of the North to trap individuals seeking to exploit minors.
During the court proceedings at Durham Crown Court, it was revealed that Heywood had sent messages to the fake profile, calling her “babe,” “gorgeous,” and “sexy,” and expressing his desire to be the first to make love to her.
He also asked if she had ever had sex before and whether she would sleep with an older man if protected.
Heywood indicated he would show her every sexual position and treat her like a woman, calling her his “sexy baby.” He organized to meet the girl on January 28, traveling from Stockton-on-Tees to Seaham, but was confronted by Guardians of the North before he could carry out his intentions.
He initially attempted to flee but was detained and arrested by police.
During questioning, Heywood claimed he believed the profile was fake and that his curiosity had led him to the meeting.
Judge Christopher Prince sentenced him to 16 months in prison, ordered him to sign the sex offenders register for ten years, and imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to restrict his online activity and contact with minors.
Throughout these proceedings, the courts emphasized the serious nature of Heywood’s offenses and the lasting impact on his victims.
His actions have been characterized as disgraceful and indicative of a pattern of predatory behavior, leading to significant sentences and restrictions aimed at protecting the community from further harm.
