DARREN CARDY FROM GRIMSBY JAILED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE AND POSSESSION OF INDECENT IMAGES
In a deeply disturbing case originating from Grimsby, Darren Cardy, aged 40, has been sentenced to four years in prison following a series of heinous sexual offenses against a young girl. The crimes spanned over a period of nearly eight years, beginning in February 2006 and culminating earlier this year.
The court heard that Cardy, who resides on Hainton Avenue in Grimsby, admitted to eight separate counts of sexual activity with the girl, revealing a pattern of abuse that left lasting scars.
Evidence presented in Grimsby Crown Court included a diary kept by the young victim, titled "My Story.
My Life.
My Ups And Downs," which detailed her traumatic experiences.
The girl’s poignant words reflected her feelings of fear, shame, and helplessness, stating, "I didn’t know what to do so I let it carry on.
It shatters your self-esteem.
I didn’t tell anyone because I didn’t think I would be believed." Prosecutor Gordon Stables explained that the police discovered the diary, which the girl had kept in hopes that someday someone might find it and understand her suffering.
The diary explicitly described Cardy as a paedophile and recounted numerous instances of abuse.
The girl expressed her fear of telling her mother, fearing disbelief and further trauma.
Her written account was a stark testament to the prolonged nature of the abuse and her desperate attempt to seek help.
When confronted by police, Cardy denied the allegations, claiming he was "absolutely devastated" by the accusations.
He insisted, "I absolutely deny touching her at all," and maintained that he was "absolutely certain" he had done nothing wrong.
However, after further investigation and evidence, he ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges.
During sentencing, Judge Peter Clark condemned Cardy for his systematic abuse of the girl, emphasizing the significant distress caused over many years.
The judge highlighted that the victim continues to suffer from the trauma inflicted upon her.
As part of his punishment, Cardy received a four-year prison sentence, which includes an additional six months to be served consecutively.
This sentence was partly due to the revocation of a previous community order imposed in March 2014 for downloading indecent images of children.
Furthermore, Cardy is now required to register as a sex offender indefinitely, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
In a related case from March 2014, authorities uncovered over 600 indecent images and videos of children stored on Cardy’s computer.
The police executed a search warrant at his residence on St Michael’s Road, Grimsby, after reports indicated that his internet connection had been used to access such material.
The investigation revealed a total of 680 images and videos, including some classified as "level five," the most explicit category.
Cardy was arrested on May 21 and admitted to discovering the images while browsing the internet, describing his actions as "stupid" and "idiotic." Following his arrest, he was sentenced to a 36-month community and supervision order, placed under a Sexual Offenders’ Prevention Order, and required to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register, underscoring the gravity of his offenses and the measures taken to protect the public from further harm.
