A man from South London, Darren Barrett, has been sentenced to prison after a lengthy investigation into allegations of child sexual abuse.Barrett, aged 40 and residing on Coventry Road in Croydon, was charged with two counts of indecent assault following a police inquiry that was initiated after the victim, who has chosen to remain anonymous for legal reasons, finally decided to speak out in August 2021.
The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation in August 2021 after receiving a report from an individual claiming to have been sexually assaulted during their childhood.
The police spokesperson confirmed that the inquiry was prompted by this disclosure, which marked a significant step in addressing long-standing allegations.
On July 22, 2022, Barrett was formally charged with two counts of indecent assault.
The case was brought before Croydon Crown Court, where Barrett was found guilty on both counts.
The court sentenced him to 18 months in prison for one of the charges and nine months for the other, with both sentences to run concurrently, meaning he will serve the combined term simultaneously.
Detective Constable Chamberlain, who led the investigation, expressed understanding of the difficulty faced by the victim in coming forward after so many years.
He stated, "It must have been incredibly difficult for the victim to come forward and speak about what they went through after so many years.
I hope they will finally have some closure." The detective also emphasized the importance of the case, saying, "This investigation and conviction demonstrate that the Met will take all allegations of sexual abuse seriously and we will follow the evidence to bring offenders to justice, no matter how long ago the offences occurred." In addition to his prison sentence, Barrett has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for a period of 10 years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and compliance with legal restrictions.
The case underscores the Metropolitan Police’s commitment to pursuing justice for victims of sexual abuse, regardless of the passage of time.
