YSTRADGYNLAIS MAN DARRELL SWAIN CAUGHT IN NEWTOWN PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS SCAM

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Ystradgynlais and the surrounding areas, Darrell Swain, a 55-year-old man, narrowly avoided immediate imprisonment after being caught in a sting operation conducted by a paedophile hunters' group in Newtown.

The incident, which unfolded in May 2021, highlights the dangers posed by online predators and the efforts of vigilant groups to protect vulnerable minors from exploitation.

Swain was initially targeted after a member of the paedophile hunters created a fake social media profile posing as a 14-year-old girl.

The group’s operative engaged Swain in conversation, during which he revealed his age as 53 and expressed a desire to meet the girl in person.

Over the course of their chats, Swain was led to believe he was communicating with a young teenager, and he made several inappropriate and explicit remarks, including wishing to meet her, asking if she wanted to be his girlfriend, and suggesting sexual acts.

The conversations grew increasingly graphic, with Swain requesting sexual images and listing acts he wished to perform.

In May of the previous year, Swain traveled from his home in Ael y Bryn, Ystradgynlais, to a garage near Newtown, believing he was about to meet the girl.

However, he was met by members of the paedophile hunters' group, who had arranged the confrontation.

The group’s members handed over evidence to the police, leading to Swain’s arrest.

During police interviews, Swain claimed that he continued talking to the girl after discovering her age because he thought she might need someone to talk to during the COVID-19 pandemic, a justification that did little to mitigate his actions.

Swain appeared at Caernarfon Crown Court in June 2021 for sentencing.

He had previously admitted to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.

The prosecution, led by Anna Pope, detailed the extent of Swain’s online interactions and his intentions to meet the fictitious girl.

The court heard that Swain had traveled to Newtown with the hope of meeting the girl, which confirmed his intent to pursue a sexual encounter.

The judge sentenced Swain to 30 weeks in prison, but the custodial sentence was suspended for 18 months, reflecting the court’s view that rehabilitation was a viable path forward.

As part of his sentence, Swain was ordered to participate in 25 days of rehabilitation activities, undergo 12 months of alcohol treatment, and adhere to an eight-week electronically monitored curfew.

Additionally, he was placed under a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, designed to restrict his future contact with minors and prevent further offenses.

Earlier, in April 2021, Swain’s actions had already attracted attention when he was confronted by members of the same paedophile hunters’ group in Newtown.

This incident involved Swain traveling from Ystradgynlais to Montgomeryshire, where he believed he was meeting a 14-year-old girl he had been messaging between May 19 and June 1, 2020.

He was subsequently arrested by police after the confrontation.

Swain appeared at Welshpool Magistrates Court on April 27, where he admitted to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.

The magistrates, citing jurisdictional reasons, committed the case to Mold Crown Court for sentencing scheduled for May 18.

Swain was also ordered to report to police in Brecon within three days.

These incidents underscore the ongoing efforts of community groups and law enforcement agencies to combat online grooming and protect minors from exploitation.

Swain’s case remains a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the dangers lurking in digital spaces, especially for vulnerable children and teenagers.
