Northampton Rapist
In a case that has shocked the Northampton community, Daniel Whelan, a 29-year-old man from Northampton, was convicted of a series of violent crimes against a woman he previously dated. The incident, which took place in the early hours of January 27 last year, resulted in Whelan being sentenced to nearly three years behind bars, following a detailed investigation and court proceedings.

Whelan's assault on the woman was particularly severe. According to police reports and court evidence, the attack lasted approximately one hour and involved multiple forms of violence. The woman recounted to authorities that during this ordeal, Whelan not only physically assaulted her by repeatedly striking her face and neck but also committed acts of sexual violence, including rape. Her injuries were serious enough to require hospital treatment, highlighting the brutality of the attack.

Fortunately, the woman managed to escape from Whelan and sought help from a neighbor, who promptly called emergency services by dialing 999. The police investigation that followed uncovered further disturbing details about Whelan’s pattern of abuse. The victim revealed that she had woken up on several occasions to find Whelan engaging in sexual acts with her without her consent, which added to the trauma she endured.

During the investigation, the woman also provided police with recordings of threatening phone calls from Whelan. These recordings included him expressing violent intentions, such as wanting to attack her with acid and even threatening to kill her. Additionally, she shared a Snapchat voice note in which Whelan explicitly stated his plans to abduct and rape another woman, further illustrating his dangerous mindset.

Whelan faced multiple charges, including three counts of rape, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH), one count of intentional strangulation, and one count of sending a communication of an indecent or offensive nature. At a court hearing on August 8, he admitted to the charge related to the assault on January 27 and to sending offensive messages. However, he denied the rape charges at that time.

Following a trial that examined the remaining allegations, Whelan was found not guilty of the rape charges on November 25. Nevertheless, he was convicted of the assault and the charge of intentional strangulation. The court proceedings culminated in a sentencing hearing on December 3 at Northampton Crown Court, where Whelan, formerly residing on Newport Pagnell Road in Northampton, was sentenced to a total of two years and eleven months in prison.

In addition to his imprisonment, Whelan was subjected to an indefinite restraining order. This order prohibits him from approaching or contacting the victim by any means, ensuring her safety and preventing further harassment. The case has been widely regarded as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic abuse and the importance of survivor bravery in seeking justice.
