DANIEL SHUFFLEBOTHAM-REEVE AND SHOCKING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN OXFORD

A man named Daniel Shufflebotham-Reeve narrowly avoided imprisonment after being convicted of sexually abusing a young girl when he was just 10 years old, an incident that involved acting out his own pornographic fantasies.

The case, which unfolded in Oxford, revealed disturbing details about the defendant’s actions and the long-lasting impact on his victim.

Shufflebotham-Reeve, now aged 25 and residing in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, was found guilty of four serious charges at Oxford Crown Court, including rape and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

The court heard that the abuse took place when he was a child himself, and the victim was significantly younger.

Despite the gravity of the allegations, he was not initially brought to justice at the time the abuse occurred, even though the victim’s teacher was aware of the accusations.

It was only in 2019 that law enforcement became involved, after the victim, who was then working at a local business, reported the abuse.

She recounted that her decision to come forward was made following a conversation with her partner.

During her testimony in court, she described how much of her life has been overshadowed by the trauma, stating, “Much of my life has been wasted crying and refusing to leave the house due to extreme anxiety, all because of him and what he did to me.” She expressed her inability to forgive her abuser and admitted she could never understand why he committed such acts.

The court proceedings revealed that Shufflebotham-Reeve had watched pornography online and then recreated the sexual acts he had seen on his laptop, which he then forced the young girl to imitate.

The defendant not only sexually assaulted her but also coerced her into performing acts on him.

During the abuse, he threatened her, warning that if she did not comply, he would “tell everyone and no one would love her,” a chilling reminder of the manipulation and fear he instilled.

In her victim impact statement, read aloud during the sentencing hearing on September 20, the woman described the profound and ongoing effects of the abuse.

She said, “So much of my life has been wasted crying and refusing to leave the house due to extreme anxiety, all because of him and what he did to me.” She also expressed her deep resentment, stating she would “never forgive” her abuser and could not comprehend his motives.

The court heard that Shufflebotham-Reeve’s actions were influenced by the adult pornography he had viewed, which he had shown to the young girl and expressed a desire to imitate.

Judge Maria Lamb, presiding over the case, emphasized that the defendant’s actions inflicted unimaginable harm on a vulnerable child.

She pointed out that if he had been an adult at the time, he could have faced many years in prison.

However, because he was only just over the age of criminal responsibility, the law dictated that his case be considered as if he were a juvenile.

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Lamb explained that had the case been dealt with when he was 10 or 11, a youth rehabilitation order would likely have been the appropriate punishment.

She stated, “I think, taking all these matters into consideration, the likely sentence had I been dealing with you as a 10-year-old would have been one of a youth rehabilitation order.” She further noted that Shufflebotham-Reeve had led a life without further offending since the incident.

The judge acknowledged the sensitive nature of the case, highlighting that the defendant and his victim had known each other as children and had even “held hands.” She described how the abuse extended beyond innocent childhood play, with the defendant showing the girl pornography on his laptop and encouraging her to copy what he had seen.

She recounted that he used manipulative language, telling her that if she did not do as he asked, “no one would love her,” and that she was afraid to visit his house due to fear of what might happen.

Judge Lamb also addressed the damaging influence of adult pornography on children, citing a pre-sentence report from a probation officer.

The report stated, “It would be difficult to overstate how damaging the consumption of pornographic material could be to a child’s sexual development,” emphasizing the corrosive effects of online pornography on young minds.

In mitigation, Sumita Mahtab-Shaikh, representing Shufflebotham-Reeve, mentioned that her client had been suspended from his job as a receptionist at the Premier Inn, raising questions about his future employment prospects.

Despite his conviction, she noted that he was supported by character references that described him in a more positive light, suggesting that he was “highly regarded” by those who knew him.

Ultimately, the court imposed a two-year community order on Daniel Shufflebotham-Reeve, with the judge stating, “I think, taking all these matters into consideration, the likely sentence had I been dealing with you as a 10-year-old would have been one of a youth rehabilitation order.” She emphasized that the case’s circumstances called for intervention and help, rather than harsh punishment, given his age at the time of the offenses and his subsequent conduct.
