JEALOUS BOYFRIEND ASSAULTED PARTNER AFTER DRINKING 20 PINTS

Jealous Daniel Pearson flew into a rage after downing 20 pints and seeing a man dance with his partner.

When the couple returned home, Pearson pushed her to the floor and banged a door onto one of her legs, city magistrates heard.

It left JPs imposing an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for a year, on Pearson of Station Road, Beeston.

He admitted assault by beating on August 4 and appeared in court the next day.

Sarah Sanderson, prosecuting, said Pearson had downed 20 pints of lager and some shots while out with his partner.

"They started arguing about a male who had been dancing in front of her.

The defendant pushed her, causing her to fall to the floor.

Then he shut a door while her leg was in the doorway," said Miss Sanderson.

The woman had declined to ask for a restraining order which would have made it a criminal offence for Pearson to contact her again, added Miss Sanderson.

Chris Saunders, mitigating, told the court: "There is a lesson for us all about the effect of alcohol." While Pearson accepted his alcohol intake, his partner had given police a statement which revealed she had 15 pints of cider, two glasses of wine and two tequilas.

"I would not be standing at that point," said Mr Saunders.

He said Pearson has started a probation course aimed at reducing domestic violence.

He works 20 hours weekly in a bargain shop but would be prepared to give that up to complete the "building better relationships" programme.

This would mean he would not be able to claim state benefits.

Mr Saunders went on: "When they are not drinking, all is rosy but there are incidents whilst in drink." "It is probably more binge drinking than something more regular.

"Mr Pearson accepts that he must have been jealous about seeing this man dancing close to his partner." Presiding magistrate Caroline Nall, who sat with two other JPs, told Pearson: "Stay out of trouble in future." The probation programme will run for the next 13 months.

Pearson must pay a £115 government surcharge and £85 prosecution costs.
