October 2000 Donegal welfare officer found guilty of possessing child abuse images A 54-year-old County Donegal community welfare officer has been convicted of possessing child pornography in video tapes, magazines and photocopies.
Letterkenny Circuit Court imposed a two-year suspended sentence and £1,500 fine on Daniel Harkin of Ballyraine, County Donegal, who is separated and a father of four.
It took police a full day to empty Harkin’s seedy hi-tech lair which included more than 1,100 disgusting videos as well as sophisticated taping equipment.
As well as a huge collection of abusive videos, cops uncovered dozens of magazines, all carefully filed away in order Gardaí seized the material after searching his house in October 1998.
The case was one of the first prosecutions under the new Child Trafficking and Pornography Act.
