Margate Sexual Abuser
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online predation, Daniel Gribbin, aged 43, from Margate, was sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of luring a vulnerable teenage girl into prostitution. The incident unfolded in 2012, but the repercussions and legal proceedings culminated in recent court sentencing.
Gribbin, who resided on Westmarsh Drive in Margate, engaged in a deceitful scheme by posing as a teenage girl in an internet chatroom. His intent was to persuade a 16-year-old girl, who was experiencing significant personal hardships due to her mother’s serious illness, to engage in sexual acts for money. The girl, feeling compelled to help with household expenses, agreed to meet him on two separate occasions.
According to court records, Gribbin traveled nearly 46 miles from Margate to Maidstone in his BMW, a vehicle described as sporty with front red leather seats and rear seats removed. On their first meeting in July 2012, the pair met in a park where Gribbin paid the girl £50 before engaging in sexual activity. He further provided her with an additional £20 to purchase the morning-after pill, indicating an awareness of the risks involved.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that on one occasion, no protection was used, and on another, the condom split, leading the girl to take emergency contraception after each encounter. The girl had agreed to meet him again, and they did so four days later, once more in the park, where they engaged in sexual intercourse. A third meeting occurred, but no sexual activity took place during that encounter.
Throughout the trial, Gribbin maintained his innocence, denying any charges of causing or inciting child prostitution and paying for sexual services from a girl under 18. However, the jury convicted him of the charges. He chose not to testify in his defense, and the court found sufficient evidence to convict him.
It was also revealed that Gribbin had a prior caution issued in March 2012 for contacting sex workers via phone and text messages, asking if they wanted to have intercourse with him. This history underscored a pattern of concerning behavior.
Judge Martin Joy, presiding over the case at Maidstone Crown Court, acknowledged the serious impact of Gribbin’s actions on the victim. The judge stated, “The impact on this young lady was considerable. She was ashamed. She lost her self-esteem and lost some of her friends. She feels degraded and manipulated by you because you took advantage of her and how vulnerable she was.”
While the judge agreed that Gribbin posed a danger to the public, he decided against imposing an extended sentence. Instead, Gribbin was sentenced to six years in prison, and a sexual offences prevention order was issued against him. Additionally, his name will remain on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
