Welshpool Child Sexual Abuser
In a case that has shocked the community of Welshpool, Daniel Dewi Brown, aged 19, faced the courts after being involved in serious allegations of engaging in sexual activities with underage girls. The incident, which came to light through a police investigation, resulted in Brown being sentenced to a two-year prison term, though this sentence was suspended for two years, allowing him to avoid immediate incarceration.
Brown appeared at Mold Crown Court on Tuesday, October 5, where he pleaded guilty to six charges related to sexual misconduct with girls under the age of 16. The investigation was initiated in May 2019 by officers from Dyfed-Powys Police after a distressing discovery made by one of the girls’ fathers. The father uncovered explicit messages exchanged between his daughter and Brown, including a video in which Brown was seen touching his genitals. These messages revealed a disturbing pattern of grooming and sexual misconduct.
The court heard that Brown, who was 17 at the time of the incidents, had met the first girl in person, where he touched her bottom and asked her to touch his penis. The girl refused on multiple occasions, but the interactions continued to raise alarm. Following these events, Brown was arrested, and his mobile phone was seized by police. Further investigations uncovered that Brown had also engaged in sexual activity with a second underage girl, with whom he met in wooded areas. During these encounters, he exposed himself and sexually touched her over her underwear, further compounding the severity of his actions.
Adding to the disturbing nature of the case, Brown was found to have contacted a 12-year-old girl through Facebook using a fake profile created by a paedophile hunter group. The court was shown evidence that Brown sent highly sexualized messages, including a photograph of his genitals, and urged the girl to keep their communication secret, warning that he could get into trouble. The paedophile hunter group alerted the police, leading to Brown’s arrest on August 8, 2020.
During the investigation, authorities discovered another mobile device containing Snapchat conversations with an unidentified victim. These messages included sexually explicit photos and requests for sexual activity. In police interviews, Brown admitted that he was “desperate for attention” and did not fully consider the implications of his actions. He claimed to have “changed” since the incidents, though the court was presented with emotional statements from victims. One victim’s statement expressed feelings of blame and confusion, stating, “I would start blaming myself even though I know it wasn’t my fault. I was confused. I will never get over it fully.”
The judge, in delivering the sentence, described the two-year prison term as “merciful,” taking into account Brown’s efforts to continue his education and maintain employment, as well as his personal circumstances. The judge emphasized that the sentence was a “golden opportunity” for Brown to reflect and reform, highlighting the seriousness of his offenses and the impact on the victims involved.
