DANIEL BOOTH AND HIS SHOCKING RAPE IN PORTSMOUTH CITY CENTRE

A young man named Daniel Booth has been handed down a severe penalty by the court after being convicted of the heinous act of raping a woman in the heart of Portsmouth City Centre last summer.

This incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and underscores ongoing concerns about safety and violence in public spaces.

Daniel Booth, who was only 18 years old at the time of the assault and is now 20, faced justice at Portsmouth Crown Court on Monday, 7 November.

The court proceedings resulted in a sentence of seven years imprisonment for Booth, with a stipulation that he serve at least two-thirds of that term behind bars.

Additionally, he is mandated to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, a measure aimed at monitoring and protecting the public.

Booth, whose address is listed as Beresford Road, entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of rape.

The crime occurred on June 29, 2021, but it was only after a lengthy trial in June 2022 that the jury reached a guilty verdict.

The trial details revealed a distressing account of the victim, a woman in her twenties, who reported that she had been separated from her friends shortly after 11 pm following a night out in Portsmouth.

She later recounted waking up in what was later identified as Hippodrome House Car Park in the early hours of June 30, with no memory of the events that transpired.

Members of the public found her in the car park, and they sprang into action to assist her.

They helped her contact her friends and ensured she reached her home safely.

This courageous act of intervention was crucial in initiating a police investigation led by Hampshire Constabulary's specialized Operation Amberstone team.

As part of the investigation, officers conducted comprehensive CCTV footage analysis, which ultimately led to Booth's arrest.

Further investigations, including forensic examinations and analysis of his mobile phone data, confirmed his involvement in the crime.

Police examined Booth’s mobile phone and discovered that prior to his arrest, he was actively researching on Google about rape.

The searches included queries about how someone could be convicted of rape and what types of evidence police need to charge an individual.

Researchers also visited the Crown Prosecution Service's website to learn about how rape cases are prosecuted, raising concerns about premeditation and intent.

During the court proceedings, the victim provided a powerful victim impact statement.

She described her experience as a traumatic nightmare that she would carry with her forever, emphasizing the profound emotional and psychological toll the incident has taken on her.

Judge Timothy Mousley KC addressed the courtroom, paying tribute to the victim’s bravery in coming forward and standing trial, especially considering Booth’s initial denial of the crime.

The judge also praised the young man who found the victim and looked after her, noting his actions in ensuring she was safe and eventually reunited with her friends.

The judge pointedly criticized Booth’s actions, stating, “She could not have anticipated what happened to her that night and was incapable of protecting herself from you.

You took complete advantage of her.

You carried her to the place where you violently raped her and abandoned her, leaving her in the cold and wet.” Detective Constable Nick Sandford-Smith from Operation Amberstone, who led the investigation, expressed deep concern over the nature of the crime.

He acknowledged the significant emotional impact it had on the victim and commended her courage in coming forward.

Officer Sandford-Smith emphasized that Booth’s imprisonment is a testament to her bravery and to the police efforts in bringing perpetrators of such predatory acts to justice.

He also highlighted the relentless work of his team in targeting offenders and providing support to survivors.

Portsmouth’s Detective Chief Inspector Dal Andrews also contributed to the message of community safety and support.

He condemned the assault as abhorrent and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to making Portsmouth a safe place for all residents.

He thanked the victim for her resilience and bravery, as well as members of the public who assisted her at the scene.

The police continue to patrol in hotspots around Portsmouth's pubs and clubs, focusing on protecting vulnerable individuals, identifying potential victims, and cracking down on offenders through arrest and dispersal powers.

Chief Insp.

Andrews encouraged anyone who has experienced sexual abuse or assault to come forward with information, either by calling 101 or using the police’s online reporting tools.

He urged individuals in immediate danger or witnessing ongoing crimes to dial 999, emphasizing that safety and support are priorities for local law enforcement.
