SWANSEA MAN DANIEL BLIGHT SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND RAPE IN ABERDARE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community, Daniel Blight, a resident of Swansea, was convicted of heinous sexual offenses committed against his partner in her own home in Aberdare.The incident, which took place in August 2022, involved a grave breach of trust and has left lasting scars on the victim, Sarah Jones.
According to court proceedings at Swansea Crown Court, the assault occurred during an evening when Miss Jones and Blight were spending time together at her residence.
As Miss Jones fell asleep on her living room sofa, Blight took advantage of her vulnerability to carry out a sexual assault and rape.
During the act, he paused to take a selfie of himself in an intimate moment, a detail that added to the severity of the crime.
The court heard that Miss Jones was unaware of what had transpired until she later discovered the selfie on Blight’s phone, which caused her to realize the full extent of his betrayal.
The following morning, after Blight had left for work, Miss Jones reviewed footage from her Hive CCTV camera, which was installed inside her home.
Although primarily aimed at the front door, the camera also captured the sofa area.
It was through this footage that she saw her partner engaging in the assault and rape while she was asleep, confirming her worst fears.
This revelation prompted her to confront Blight, who initially denied her accusations, claiming she had been awake during the incident.
He then changed his story, admitting he knew she was asleep at the time.
Miss Jones, who works at a coffee shop, described the emotional toll the ordeal has taken on her.
She expressed her disbelief and heartbreak, stating, “I couldn’t believe what I was watching.
This was somebody I trusted.
I was asleep in my own home.
I should have been safe.
It was such a massive abuse of trust.
He was my partner and he claimed to love me.” Following the assault, Miss Jones ended her relationship with Blight.
Despite this, the two maintained contact for several months, during which she encouraged him to seek counseling, believing he had issues related to sex.
They briefly rekindled their relationship at the end of 2022, but after another incident of an intimate nature, she decided to cut ties permanently and reported the earlier assault to the police.
Blight, aged 37 and residing on Buckingham Road, Bonymaen, Swansea, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
During the trial, he claimed he believed he had implied consent for sex.
However, the jury found him guilty of two counts of sexual assault by penetration and one count of rape.
It was revealed that Blight had a prior conviction from 2012 for possession of indecent images, for which he received a community order.
In mitigation, barrister David Leathley described Blight as being “slavishly in a state of devotion” towards Miss Jones, whom he regarded as “the divinity he was worshiping.” He controversially suggested that Blight’s actions on the night of the assault were “an act of worship” directed at his partner.
The defense also labeled the case as “truly bizarre” and called Blight a “crass idiot” for his behavior.
Judge Huw Rees addressed the court, highlighting that a pre-sentence report revealed Blight’s preoccupation with sex, which was a significant factor in his life.
As a result, Blight was sentenced to a total of seven years in prison—seven years for rape and four years for each sexual assault, all to run concurrently.
He will serve two-thirds of his sentence in custody before being released on license to serve the remainder in the community.
Additionally, Blight was designated a lifelong sex offender and was subjected to a 10-year restraining order, prohibiting him from contacting Miss Jones directly or indirectly.
Miss Jones shared her ongoing emotional struggles following the assault.
She explained, “If I’m honest I’m still trying to fully process what happened.
It has affected my trust in everyone, and I feel so anxious and vulnerable.
I used to be very sociable and enjoyed going out with friends, now I tend to avoid mixing with people.
I’m worried about what the future may hold.
How can I have trust in a future relationship?
Invite someone into my house again?” She also expressed her belief that Blight thought she would be too embarrassed to testify or have the CCTV footage shown publicly, but she emphasized her determination to prevent him from harming anyone else.
Detective Constable Elizabeth Picton of South Wales Police commented on the case, stating, “Daniel Blight preyed upon his victim when they were completely helpless, but was crucially caught on camera in critical evidence for his conviction.
At South Wales Police, we relentlessly pursue the perpetrators of sexual offences and ensure that victims receive justice.
It takes great bravery for a victim to report a sexual offence, and this behaviour will never be tolerated.”
