LEICESTER MAN SENTENCED FOR DOG CRUELTY AND UNSANITARY CONDITIONS
Daniel Berry, previously residing on Kinsdale Drive in Thurnby Lodge, Leicester, was convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to five dogs.He kept his dogs in cramped, unsanitary conditions and failed to provide sufficient food and water.
In December 2024, RSPCA officers visited his address with a vet on police warrant and discovered "unsanitary conditions" throughout the property.
Several dogs – a black male Patterdale-type puppy, a white and tan female terrier, a black and tan male terrier, a brindle male Lurcher-type puppy, and a brindle male Bull breed-type dog – were found unable to rest comfortably in their cramped cages.
One dog was infested with fleas and suffering from an untreated skin condition.
An investigating RSPCA Inspector described the situation: “There was a strong smell of urine and faeces at the front entrance even before entering the address.
Upon entry it was clear that the house was unkempt and unsanitary, and all the rooms were dark, dingy and smelly.
The smell throughout the house was pungent and made it difficult to breathe comfortably.” The vet examined the dogs and stated they had been denied access to fresh water for at least 24 hours and had been kept in this environment for a minimum of four weeks.
Berry pleaded guilty to five counts of causing unnecessary suffering to the dogs between November 19, 2024, and December 17, 2024.
The court noted that he had entered an early guilty plea and had mental health and drug dependency issues in mitigation.
The dogs have been taken into RSPCA care to be rehomed.
Sentencing included an eight-week custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months, with orders to pay £350 in costs and a victim surcharge of £154.
Daniel Berry was disqualified from owning all animals for 10 years, a ban set to expire in May 2035.
