DANIEL BAINES FROM YORK JAILED FOR 20 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN
In May 2021, a man from York named Daniel Brian Baines was sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually abusing four children over several years, causing them to endure what one victim described as being "put through hell." During the trial, the victims provided personal statements detailing how Baines's actions had a devastating effect on their lives, impacting their relationships well into adulthood.York Crown Court heard that the victims did not realize Baines had harmed other children until all four came forward to speak with police and testify against him.
One victim read a statement to the court, saying, "He has put us through hell through what he did to us and then by trying to lie his way out." Another added that Baines’s abuse had caused her to become sexualized at an early age.
A different victim described the aftermath of giving her police statement as the "worst two years of her life," and more than one testified that the stress of recounting their abuse and testifying had brought them to tears upon leaving court.
The court was told that victims kept silent during and after their abuse due to embarrassment and other reasons.
Baines, aged 29 and residing on Ganton Place, York, denied multiple charges—including two counts of rape, 13 of sexual assault, one of indecent assault, and two of indecency with a child—but was convicted by a York jury last month.
He appeared at York Crown Court on Monday, May 17, to receive his sentence.
Baines was sentenced to 20 years in prison and will be registered as a sex offender for life.
The court was informed that all the victims are now adults.
Additionally, the court noted that two of Baines’s offences classify him as an offender of “special concern,” which results in an extra year of supervised probation after his release.
Judge Sean Morris, the Recorder of York, listened to personal statements from all four victims and described the impact of Baines’s crimes as "devastating." He criticized Baines’s choice to deny the charges and force the victims to testify, calling his actions "cruel." Judge Morris stated, "This should have been a case where you admitted your wrongdoing.
But you are still in denial, despite the most overwhelming, convincing evidence given by [the victims]."
