DANIEL ALDERSON CAUGHT IN HAVANT AND WATERLOOVILLE THROUGH FAMILY DNA TECH

In a significant breakthrough for forensic investigations, Daniel Alderson, a 42-year-old man residing in Waterlooville, Hampshire, was ultimately convicted and sentenced to prison for two historic sexual assault cases. The police's innovative use of familial DNA analysis played a crucial role in bringing him to justice, highlighting a new era in crime detection technology.

Daniel Alderson, who lives on Rudolph Court in Waterlooville, admitted to committing two indecent assaults that occurred several years apart, with the earliest dating back to 1992. His crimes involved an 18-year-old woman assaulted on August 30, 1992, in a subway located in Langstone, Havant, Hampshire. The second assault targeted a 12-year-old girl on March 6, 1997, in a subway in Portsmouth. These offences, committed in public underground stations, had long remained unsolved until recent technological advances.

Police officials revealed that the case saw a pivotal development in August 2000 when the Forensic Science Service identified DNA evidence from both crime scenes that matched. However, it was not until four years later that the police could leverage a cutting-edge familial DNA search technique, which compares DNA samples to find close relatives in the national database. This method significantly increased the chances of identifying suspects based on familial connections rather than direct matches.

On August 18, 2004, authorities arrested Alderson after the familial DNA search linked a DNA sample from a man who had been detained for a minor offence to the evidence collected from the crime scenes. Alderson was asked to provide a DNA sample, which resulted in a one-in-a-billion match to the DNA found at both attack sites. Despite his refusal to comment during police interviews, Alderson, a machine operator by profession, eventually pleaded guilty to both charges during a court hearing on September 23 of the same year.

His sentencing took place at Portsmouth Crown Court, where he was sentenced to four years in prison for the assault on the woman in 1992 and an additional six years for the assault on the young girl in 1997. The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning he will serve the combined term simultaneously. Furthermore, Alderson was ordered to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, a measure that underscores the severity of his crimes and the ongoing threat he posed.

Det Sgt Doug Utting emphasized the importance of this technological advancement, warning that offenders now need to be cautious about their relatives' interactions with law enforcement. He stated, “If an individual thinks that as long as they do not get into trouble again that they will be all right, they are wrong. Now they would have to make sure their father, brother, sons, etc., stay away from the police because otherwise there is the potential they will get caught and prosecuted.”

This case marks a notable milestone in the fight against sexual crimes, demonstrating how familial DNA analysis can uncover long-unsolved cases and bring justice to victims. The police and forensic experts see this as a breakthrough that will likely lead to more cold cases being solved in the future, providing closure for victims and their families.
