In a disturbing incident at Canterbury West station, Damien Olubek, a resident of Kent, engaged in highly inappropriate and threatening conduct towards an unsuspecting female passenger.The ordeal lasted over an hour and was captured in its entirety on CCTV footage, revealing a pattern of aggressive and intimidating behavior that left the victim in a state of terror.
According to reports, the 21-year-old victim was waiting alone for a train when Olubek approached her.
His actions quickly escalated from unwanted verbal advances to more invasive physical gestures.
He repeatedly asked her for kisses and hugs, attempting to coerce her into physical contact.
His behavior included poking, squeezing, and touching her arm and leg without her consent.
At one point, he tried to pull her hand toward his crotch area while performing a lewd act, which was described as a simulated sex act, further intensifying the victim’s distress.
The harassment did not end there.
Olubek followed the woman from a bench outside the station, where he initially approached her, onto the platform.
His relentless pursuit and invasive conduct caused her significant fear and discomfort.
Fortunately, a member of the public noticed her distress and intervened, coming to her aid and alerting station staff to the situation.
This intervention was crucial in preventing further escalation and ensuring the victim's safety.
During the subsequent police investigation, Olubek attempted to conceal his identity by providing a false name, claiming it was 'Steven Gerrard.' Despite his efforts to evade recognition, authorities identified him and brought him before Canterbury Crown Court.
Olubek resides on High Street in Margate, and his actions at Canterbury West station have caused widespread concern and condemnation.
In court, it was argued on his behalf that the physical contact was not inherently sexual.
