TYNE AND WEAR COUPLE SENTENCED FOR STARVING DOGS AND BANNED FROM KEEPING ANIMALS
A couple from Tyne and Wear, Liam Redden and Daisy Dunn, have been banned from keeping animals for two years after starving their dogs. The court was told that the condition of the dogs—a Presa Canario named Enzo and a husky called Fen—led a vet to conclude they had been suffering from starvation for at least three months.
Inspector Bestwick, accompanied by police, visited their home on 17 January after reports about the dogs’ welfare.
Enzo was found emaciated, with a body condition score of one out of nine, weighing only 26.5kg when an ideal weight is around 50kg.
Fen was also underweight, with a body condition score of two out of nine, weighing 20.2kg, with an ideal likely over 25kg.
Both dogs showed clear signs of starvation, including no water, overgrown nails, no bed, and faeces by the door.
They were seized and later recovered after months in kennels, gaining weight and improving health.
Redden and Dunn pleaded guilty to offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
They were sentenced at Newcastle Magistrates Court on 7 November, fined £120 each, ordered to pay costs, and given a two-year ban on keeping animals.
Enzo is now under the care of the RSPCA Felledge Animal Centre and will be available for rehoming once fully recovered.
