CYPRIAN OKORO'S SHOCKING CRIME IN NORWICH: LOCUM DOCTOR'S FALL FROM GRACE
In November 2014, a disturbing case unfolded involving a locum doctor named Cyprian Okoro, who was working in Norwich at the time.The court heard that Okoro’s life was profoundly impacted by his own actions after he was convicted of possessing indecent images of a child along with several extreme pornographic images.
The case revealed a troubling pattern of behavior involving the use of his mobile device to access and store illicit material.
It was established that Dr.
Okoro, aged 53, had received these images through the WhatsApp messaging application on his phone.
Among the material was a video, which he had deliberately moved into a secure, password-protected vault on his device.
This particular video was initially received in 2012 and was later discovered by police during a search of his phone in August 2013.
Despite the initial discovery, the video remained on his device and was still present when authorities conducted a subsequent search in February 2014.
Further investigation uncovered a number of extreme pornographic images stored on Okoro’s phone.
By the time police searched his device again in February of the following year, some of these images had been deleted by Okoro himself, indicating an attempt to conceal or remove evidence.
The police’s findings led to a four-day trial, during which Okoro was found guilty of one count of possessing an indecent image of a child and five counts of possessing extreme pornographic images.
Following the trial, in October, the case was brought before Norwich Crown Court for sentencing.
Dr.
Okoro, who was suspended from practicing medicine by the General Medical Council (GMC) pending a hearing scheduled for the following year, appeared in court to face the consequences of his actions.
The sentencing judge, Recorder Maureen Baker QC, handed down a sentence of nine months’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months.
She expressed her view that Okoro’s own actions had effectively destroyed his life and emphasized that his professional career in medicine was likely over.
Recorder Baker stated, “Without people like you viewing images like this, the corruption of such young lives would not occur at all.” Her comments underscored the gravity of his offenses and their impact on vulnerable victims.
Stephen Bailey, representing Okoro, acknowledged the severity of the situation, suggesting that his medical career was “very likely” over and that his actions had “destroyed his professional life.” In addition to the suspended sentence, Okoro, of Cameron Place, London, was subjected to 18 months of supervision.
He was also ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and to undertake activities related to the internet sex offender treatment program.
Furthermore, he is required to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years.
The court also imposed financial penalties, including costs of £1,200 and a victim surcharge of £100, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the need for accountability.
