April 2012 CHILD SEX ASSAULT CRIMES DOWN IN CUMBRIA Sex assaults on children in Cumbria fell by one-third last year.

Figures released yesterday by the NSPCC reveal that Cumbria Constabulary dealt with 123 sex crimes involving children in 2010/11, compared with 188 the previous year.

This includes rape, incest and abuse of children through prostitution and pornography.

Of those 123, 19 of the victims had not reached secondary school age and eight were aged five and under.

However, the majority of the offences, 104, were reported against 11 to 17-year-olds.

The reduction is being attributed in part to specialist programmes to protect children in Cumbria from sexual abuse, which are run by the NSPCC from their Carlisle service centre.

The children’s charity is now calling for parents, the Government and schools to take greater action to drastically reduce these figures.
