SWINDON SCHOOL HEADTEACHER CREIGHTON MUIRHEAD JAILED FOR ABUSING PUPILS IN SWINDON AND DORKING
In March 2020, a former headteacher from Swindon was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being found guilty of sexually abusing multiple pupils over a span of more than a decade.Creighton Muirhead, who served as the headteacher at Ruskin Junior School in Swindon from 1995 until 2008, was convicted of abusing a total of 19 children during his tenure.
The case was described by the presiding judge as a stark example of the failure of child protection systems.
Throughout the years of his offending, Muirhead engaged in a series of disturbing acts.
He would watch children in the shower, force them to walk across the school’s changing rooms wet and naked to retrieve towels, and call students to his desk where he would inappropriately touch their skirts and bottoms.
These acts of abuse spanned across two different schools and two counties, with the earliest incidents occurring at the Weald School near Dorking, Surrey, where Muirhead had previously worked before moving to Swindon.
At Ruskin Junior School, Muirhead also ran a gymnastics club, during which he assaulted additional children.
One victim recounted how Muirhead would make girls change on a stage while he watched, creating an environment of fear and exploitation.
Several other victims described how the abuse led them to abandon sports and afterschool activities, and how the trauma caused them to suffer from anxiety and depression well into their adult lives.
Despite multiple reports to authorities, including two reports to Wiltshire Police, involvement with children’s services, and a formal complaint to the school’s board of governors, no action was taken at the time to prevent Muirhead from continuing his teaching career.
It was only after his arrest and subsequent trial that the full extent of his misconduct was revealed.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Rufus Taylor emphasized the overwhelming evidence against Muirhead.
He highlighted that there were 19 victims, 23 counts of indecent assault, and incidents occurring over a period of more than ten years.
The judge remarked on the disturbing duality of Muirhead’s character, suggesting that he was capable of controlling his behavior at times but was driven by an enduring sexual interest in children.
The judge condemned the breach of trust inherent in a teacher or headmaster abusing their pupils, describing it as one of the most egregious violations.
Throughout the hour-long hearing, Muirhead, now aged 67, remained unmoved as details of his offenses were read aloud.
Following a six-week trial, a jury unanimously convicted him of 23 counts of indecent assault earlier in the month.
As a result, he was sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison.
His sentence includes a three-year term and an additional one-year license period for one of the counts, which involved him picking up a victim in a school corridor.
Many of Muirhead’s victims appeared in court, some in person and others via video link, to give impact statements.
One victim, a former pupil at Ruskin School, expressed her disillusionment with the education system’s failure to protect her.
She stated that teachers should serve as guides and role models, especially during childhood’s formative years, which should be a time of safety and care.
Her statement, read by prosecutor Caroline Carberry QC, described how she was often on high alert at Ruskin and how her initial report to police was dismissed, adding to her feelings of betrayal and fear of repercussions.
Another victim remarked that while she and others knew Muirhead was guilty, he had yet to show any remorse.
She called on him to admit his guilt and express regret for his actions.
A different survivor shared how her life had been overshadowed by painful memories after receiving a police call four years prior, illustrating the long-lasting impact of his abuse.
Judge Taylor noted that although the maximum sentences for indecent assault have increased over the years, he was bound by the statutory maximums applicable at the time of each offense, which ranged from five to ten years depending on the specific circumstances.
The judge also revealed that it was common knowledge among some pupils that Muirhead would sexually assault girls, citing an incident where a group of boys laughed at a victim, joking that “Mr Muirhead was now her boyfriend.” He further stated that the assaults often occurred in plain sight, including classrooms, and were nearly identical in nature.
Muirhead’s disturbing pattern included hanging around showers to supervise, which he used as an opportunity to indulge his sexual fascination.
In conclusion, Muirhead was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
He has been placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and will be prohibited from working with children for the rest of his life, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the breach of trust he committed in the educational environment.
