A man identified as Craig Watson has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of raping a young girl in the late 1990s in Worcestershire. The criminal acts, which involved a six-year-old victim, took place during two separate incidents in 1998 and 1999.
At the time of these heinous crimes, Watson was only between 14 and 15 years old, highlighting the disturbing nature of the allegations.
The serious case culminated in a guilty verdict on March 30 this year, with Watson, aged 39 at the time of sentencing, being formally convicted of both rape and sexual assault.
His crime spree stretched back more than two decades, yet it only came to light in recent years, prompting a thorough investigation by authorities.
Following the conclusion of the trial, Watson was sentenced on May 18 at Worcester Crown Court to a prison term of two and a half years.
The sentence also includes a lifetime requirement to register as a sex offender, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities post-release.
Watson’s address at the time of sentencing was recorded as Walter Nash Road West, Kidderminster, a town in Worcestershire.
The victim of this disturbing case demonstrated commendable bravery by coming forward and reporting the assaults after many years.
Det Con Matthew Harris, who led the police investigation for West Mercia Police, publicly praised the victim, saying: “I’d like to commend the victim on her immense courage in coming forward to report what Watson did to her.” He expressed satisfaction that justice had been served, emphasizing the importance of addressing all reports of sexual offences, regardless of how long ago they occurred.
“I’m pleased that justice has been done and that Watson will now rightly spend time in prison for his crimes.
I hope this helps to show that we take all reports of rape and sexual assault seriously and will thoroughly investigate them regardless of how long ago they took place,” the officer stated.
A spokesperson for West Mercia Police further summarized the case: “A man from Kidderminster has been jailed for two-and-a-half years for the rape and sexual assault of a girl over 20 years ago.
He will also be added to the sex offenders' register for life.” The offences took place while the girl was only six years old, and Watson was between 14 and 15 years old at the time.
The case, which was prosecuted at Worcester Crown Court, came after a four-day trial, culminating in Watson's conviction and subsequent imprisonment.
