CRAIG CROWTHER FROM NORTHWICH JAILED FOR CHILD SEXUAL OFFENSES AND IMAGE SHARING IN CHESTER
A man from Cheshire, Craig Crowther, has been sentenced to four years and four months in prison after being convicted of child sexual offenses and sharing indecent images. The 31-year-old was identified by National Crime Agency (NCA) investigators as the online username craggy2014.
Throughout their investigations, Crowther engaged in online discussions revealing his sexual interest in children and sharing explicit material.
In May 2020, Crowther, residing on Tilstone Close, Northwich, confessed to an undercover police officer who was posing as another user that he liked to engage with children and had access to a child he had sexually abused.
Prosecutor Frances Willmott stated at Chester Crown Court on April 14 that Crowther even shared indecent images of the child in an attempt to gain entry into an online paedophile group.
Court proceedings revealed that on July 15, 2020, Crowther exchanged messages with an undercover FBI officer, sharing ten images of children.
He encouraged the officer—believed to be another user—to take pictures of a child and send them to him.
Crowther also boasted about taking a sexually explicit photograph of a sleeping child he had sexually assaulted, admitting to filming the incident but deleting the footage immediately, recognizing the wrongfulness of his actions.
When arrested in July 2021, authorities discovered 56 indecent images of children on Crowther’s phone, categorized from A to C, including images depicting him sexually assaulting a child.
During the arrest, Crowther made comments such as, "my life is over, nobody knows, I've been expecting you, I know what I've done and what I've been on and I got no sexual gratification from it." He faced multiple charges, including three counts of assault of a child under 13 by touching, three counts of making indecent images of a child, two counts of taking indecent images, and two counts of distributing category C indecent images.
Crowther pleaded guilty to all charges on February 11 at Chester Magistrates Court.
Defense lawyer Brian Treadwell stated that Crowther expressed remorse and took responsibility for his actions.
Today, at Chester Crown Court, Judge Patrick Thompson sentenced Crowther to four years and four months in prison.
Upon release, he will remain on license for four years, be subjected to a lifetime sexual harm prevention order, and be registered as a sex offender for life.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Thompson said, "You made it clear in conversations that you have an unhealthy interest in young children." He criticized Crowther’s explanations in the pre-sentence report, specifically dismissing his claim that he shared images online to catch other paedophiles, calling it a full of denial.
The judge emphasized, "It seems to me that you are not prepared to accept the reality that you are a paedophile.
Children must be protected from men like you." NCA investigations manager Hazel Stewart commented, "Craig Crowther’s crimes were despicable, and our intervention helped safeguard children.
He was willing to share explicit images of his victim online, bragging about his abuse to gain respect among like-minded offenders.
His actions were callous beyond belief, and he knew exactly what he was doing." Stewart added, "The NCA remains committed to protecting those affected by child sexual abuse and disrupting offenders who pose a threat to children, ensuring they are brought to justice."
