CRAIG CARTH SENTENCED TO 13 YEARS FOR BRUTAL ASSAULT ON FOUR-YEAR-OLD IN LONDON
In a case that has shocked the community and highlighted the severity of child abuse, Craig Carth, a 27-year-old man from South West London, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for inflicting grievous bodily harm on a four-year-old girl. The incident, which occurred in March of the previous year, resulted in the young girl being hospitalized in critical condition and spending days in intensive care.
According to court records, Carth was found guilty by a jury at Kingston Crown Court after a three-week trial.
The charges stemmed from an assault that left the child with severe internal injuries, including two tears in the front wall of her intestine.
The girl, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, was rushed to St George’s Hospital in Tooting early on the morning of March 26, after her mother called emergency services due to her vomiting and apparent distress.
Medical professionals at St George’s Hospital quickly identified the gravity of her injuries.
Surgeons performed an emergency operation, discovering the two holes in her intestine caused by trauma to her upper abdomen.
The injuries were believed to have been inflicted within the 48 hours prior to her hospitalization.
The severity of her condition necessitated intensive care, and she fought for her life in the days following her surgery.
Fortunately, she eventually made a full recovery, thanks in large part to the expert care provided by the hospital staff.
Carth was initially detained at the scene along with another man and two women.
However, charges against the other three individuals were not pursued, as they were found not guilty of causing or permitting serious harm to the child.
Carth’s arrest was made at the time of the incident, but it was not until February of this year that he was formally charged and brought to trial.
Detective Sergeant Tariq Farooqi, a member of the Wandsworth child abuse investigation team, expressed satisfaction with the outcome.
“This is a substantial sentence, and I am pleased that Carth will now be in prison for a significant amount of time,” he stated.
“I’m glad that the weight of evidence helped the jury come to a unanimous finding of guilt against Carth.” He also emphasized the importance of the medical team's role in saving the young girl’s life.
“Had it not been for the excellence of the consultant paediatric surgeon and staff at St George’s Hospital, this young girl may well have died.
Thankfully, she has made a full recovery.”
