Febuary 2007 Sex offender took children to his flat despite ban A SEX offender has been jailed after repeatedly inviting groups of children to his flat despite being banned from talking to youngsters. Corbin Curran breached a Sex Offenders Prevention Order (Sopo) banning him from making contact with children just days after it was imposed. The 51-year-old, who has convictions for indecently assaulting young boys and gross indecency in the 1990s, was made subject of the Sopo in December after police received information that youngsters were spotted going in to his home. The order banned him from communicating with three named children. But just a few days later police visited Curran at his home, in Copnor Road, Copnor, Portsmouth, and found children were still using it as a hangout. As a result the terms of the Sopo were extended to prevent him from contacting any child under the age of 16. However, just nine days later the police, who were monitoring him, visited and found four children aged between 12 and 14 at his home. Curran was arrested and told police he had also breached the order on four previous occasions by allowing a teenage boy into his flat. Officers responsible for monitoring Curran in the community said they had acted as soon as they received information about his activities. Detective Inspector Nigel Oliver, who heads the Offender Management Unit, said: ‘We acted swiftly in this case and I’m satisfied that we did everything we could. ‘There was a risky situation building here and we acted promptly following the information we received to prevent anything untoward from happening. ‘The case shows that the system of monitoring in place is good and usable and that breaches of these orders will be treated seriously by the courts.’ At Portsmouth Crown Court Curran was jailed for 18 months. Judge Ian Pearson said Curran had ‘flagrantly’ breached the Sopo. He added: ‘Although these offences did not lead in turn to sexual offences they are repeated, flagrant breaches of an order designed to protect young children. The contact you had with the children may well have been for a possible sexual motive.’ Curran admitted five counts of breaching a Sopo.
