CARNOUSTIE MAN JAILED FOR VIOLENT ASSAULT ON GIRLFRIEND
A 21-year-old man named Connor McGregor from Carnoustie was sentenced to three years in jail after being found guilty of a severe assault on his girlfriend, Danielle Lawson. The court heard that McGregor attacked Ms Lawson along Wardmill Road in Arbroath as they were walking home from a pub.
During the altercation, he chased her when she tried to walk away, and he pushed her multiple times, causing her to fall.
The most serious part of the assault involved McGregor grabbing her by the throat and strangling her until she nearly lost consciousness, which he then continued by throwing her onto the ground.
During the attack, two bystanders passed and Ms Lawson pleaded for help, saying, "If you don’t help me and take me to safety then I’ll be dead," but they walked on without intervening.
Ms Lawson’s injuries included a broken arm.
Despite denying the assault initially, McGregor was convicted by a jury after trial.
The court also noted that McGregor had prior convictions for assault and threatening behavior towards Ms Lawson.
His solicitor acknowledged that a custodial sentence was inevitable.
Sheriff Tom Hughes stated, "This matter went to trial before a jury and they convicted you of a very serious charge.
I’ve read the terms of a background report and a custodial sentence is inevitable.
You have a bad record of previous convictions and this is a very serious matter which took place while you were on bail." McGregor’s sentence includes three years in prison followed by a one-year supervised release order.
The sheriff emphasized the gravity of the offense and McGregor’s record, highlighting that the assault endangered Ms Lawson’s life and was particularly serious.
The assault occurred on September 12 of the previous year in Arbroath.
