SCOTS DOCTOR STRUCK OFF AFTER GROPING FEMALE PATIENT DURING CHEST EXAM
A medical professional in Scotland, Dr.Colin Wilson, has been removed from the medical register following an incident in which he inappropriately touched a female patient during a chest examination.
Wilson, who examined a mother and her young child in Oban, Argyll, in December 2017, performed a routine check on the child due to symptoms of cough and breathlessness.
After completing the child's assessment, he proceeded to examine the woman, referred to as Patient A, who was complaining of a sore throat and swollen glands.
During this exam, Wilson placed his hands under her clothing and cupped her breasts, with his hand positioned over her bra and fingers touching her skin.
The incident was reported by the woman after she left the clinic, first to her partner and eventually to authorities including the police, NHS Highland, the practice, and the General Medical Council.
In her statement to the GMC, she recounted that Wilson’s entire hand was on her breast, with his knuckles aligned with her bra line and the fingers touching her skin.
She described the action as a simple grab before he withdrew his hand.
Although police questioned Wilson, he was not criminally charged and returned to work in January 2018.
However, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service later found his behavior to be sexually motivated and imposed a removal from the medical register, citing professional misconduct.
During the tribunal hearing, Wilson's legal representative apologized to the complainant, acknowledging her distress and expressing regret on his client’s behalf.
The panel concluded that there was no medical justification for Wilson’s action and noted he appeared flustered afterward.
The tribunal emphasized that this misconduct represented a serious breach of medical standards, particularly because it involved unwarranted physical contact over clothing and without consent, and in front of her young child.
The chairman, Nathan Moxon, stated that Wilson’s actions exploited the patient’s vulnerability and violated her rights.
The tribunal determined that the seriousness of the misconduct and Wilson’s lack of remorse justified striking his name from the register to uphold public trust.
Wilson, who had already retired prior to disciplinary proceedings and was previously known for volunteer work with the RNLI, was thus removed from the medical register to protect the integrity of the profession and the public’s confidence in medical practitioners.
