COLIN PITCHFORK AND THE UK: A CASE OF SERIAL MURDERS AND EARLY FORENSIC SCIENCE
On 21 November 1983, 15-year-old Lynda Mann took a shortcut home from babysitting instead of her usual route.She did not arrive home, prompting her parents and neighbors to search throughout the night.
The following morning, her body was discovered on a deserted footpath known locally as the Black Pad.
She had been raped and strangled.
Forensic analysis available at the time linked semen found on her body to a male with type A blood and an enzyme profile that matched only about 10% of males.
With no additional evidence or leads, the case remained unsolved.
Almost three years later, on 31 July 1986, another 15-year-old girl, Dawn Ashworth, left her home to visit a friend's house.
Her parents expected her back by 9:30 pm, but when she failed to return, they reported her missing.
Two days later, her body was found in a wooded area near Ten Pound Lane.
She had been beaten, savagely raped, and strangled, exhibiting a modus operandi similar to the first attack.
Semen samples from her confirmed the same blood type as Lynda Mann.
An initial suspect was Richard Buckland, a 17-year-old local with learning difficulties.
While Buckland was innocent of both crimes, he inadvertently revealed knowledge of Ashworth’s body and confessed to being involved in her murder during questioning, though he denied any connection to the first case.
