COLIN HOPE AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENCES IN RENFREWSHIRE AND PAISLEY
A disturbing case has unfolded in Renfrewshire involving Colin Hope, a man at the age of 81 who has been officially placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register following convictions related to multiple serious sexual assault charges.The first incident of note took place in December 2016 during a train journey that traveled between Johnstone and Glasgow Central.
Hope was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl by unlawfully placing his hand up her skirt.
The young girl, who was traveling to Glasgow to do her Christmas shopping from Ardrossan South Beach, North Ayrshire, detailed her traumatic experience in court.
She explained that the train was busy when Hope, who boarded at Johnstone station, approached her and began to make her feel increasingly uncomfortable.
According to her testimony, Hope's hand was on her thigh and between her legs for an extended period of approximately 10 to 15 minutes, during which he repeatedly touched her while her skirts remained in place.
The girl described her reaction afterward as being in a state of hysteria and anxiety, crying and experiencing a severe emotional response after disembarking from the train.
In addition to the train incident, the court heard about two separate assaults on women inside a supermarket in Renfrewshire.
One woman recounted how on July 24, 2021, Hope approached her in the aisles while she was searching for plastic or paper cups.
She described feeling so disturbed that she followed him around the store to watch his movements and later called her husband in tears, overwhelmed by the traumatic experience.
She later confirmed that she was physically sick upon returning home that evening.
Another supermarket employee revealed that on December 17, 2021, Hope again sexually assaulted her in a different incident.
She described how his hand brushed across her and touched the upper area of her groin, causing her to feel violated.
During the trial, Hope denied all allegations of sexual misconduct.
He claimed that his actions were accidental, attributing the incidents to an eye condition that affected his vision.
Hope explained that he might see people but not their finer details and insisted that any contact was unintentional.
He stated that he often held out his hands for balance and to avoid bumping into objects or individuals, which could explain the touching, although he denied repeating the acts deliberately.
When asked about the specific allegations involving the supermarket workers, he responded, "not to my knowledge." His legal representative, Linzi Galbraith, confirmed that Hope maintains his stance of innocence and that his current residence is elsewhere, not in Renfrewshire.
She also explained that he is in the process of being registered as partially sighted, which was presented as context for his behavior.
Yesterday, Sheriff Ian Anderson sentenced Hope, ordering him to be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of 12 months and to be supervised by the social work department.
The court viewed CCTV footage from within the Renfrewshire supermarket, which displayed Hope pushing a trolley with both hands on the handle, but also demonstrated, on multiple occasions, how he would momentarily drop a hand from the trolley and make inappropriate contact with women passing by.
This troubling case highlights the serious nature of his offenses and the importance of vigilant law enforcement and judicial procedures in safeguarding the community from individuals with a history of sexual misconduct.
