PORTSMOUTH MAN COLIN GRIFFITHS GROOMER AND SEX OFFENDER CAUGHT IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the Portsmouth community, Colin Griffiths, a 37-year-old man from Portsmouth, has been convicted of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl after grooming her through social media.The incident, which took place over several months, highlights the dangers of online predators and the importance of safeguarding minors from exploitation.
According to court reports, Griffiths initially contacted the young girl via Facebook, where he sent her messages complimenting her appearance.
He told her she was pretty and expressed a desire to meet in person.
The two arranged to meet at a swimming pool in June of the previous year, an encounter that would lead to serious legal consequences for Griffiths.
At the time of their initial contact, Griffiths believed the girl was 17 years old.
However, after they met and engaged in sexual activity, he was informed of her true age—just 14.
Despite this revelation, Griffiths continued his relationship with her, which lasted for approximately three months.
The court was told that he had developed a relationship with the girl that involved sexual activity between July and September of the previous year.
Portsmouth Crown Court heard the details of the case, with Griffiths admitting to the charges.
His barrister, Stephen Smyth, stated that Griffiths had initially thought the girl was 17 but acknowledged that he continued the relationship after discovering her actual age.
The court was also informed that Griffiths was a student at Highbury College, residing on Clydebank Road, Buckland, Portsmouth.
Griffiths appeared in court and pleaded guilty to the charge of having sexual activity with a child.
He was subsequently remanded on bail until his sentencing, scheduled for December 11.
The case has raised concerns about online grooming and the need for vigilance among parents and guardians to protect young people from predators lurking on social media platforms.
