BELFAST MAN WALKS FREE AFTER BEING FOUND WITH VILE CHILD ABUSE IMAGES.

A man from Belfast, who was found in possession of hundreds of child exploitation images that were too horrific for even a judge to describe, was granted an Enhanced Combination Order (ECO) last week.

Sentencing Colin Doak at Antrim Crown Court on Friday, Judge Laura Ievers KC emphasized that the descriptions of the images in this case are so disturbing that she chose not to read them publicly during sentencing.

She described the images as "depraved," involving very young children and even newborn babies engaging in penetrative sexual acts, with some images clearly showing distress.

During an earlier hearing, Doak, whose current address is under a court-imposed publication restriction due to prior incidents, pleaded guilty to all but one of the 23 charges he faced.

The offences, committed between 23 March 2022 and 8 March 2023, include three counts of distributing or displaying indecent images and videos, 13 counts of making indecent images and videos, and three charges relating to possession of prohibited images and extreme pornography.

Details of the charges indicate that Doak's material involved images at categories A, B, and C, with Category A images depicting children involved in penetrative sexual acts, including rape cases, according to legal classifications.

Judge Ievers revealed that the South Western Organised Crime Unit from England contacted the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in February 2023, reporting that Doak was sending images to an undercover officer via encrypted messaging.

The court heard that prior to this report, Doak had shared Category A and B images and videos with the undercover officer.

Following this intelligence exchange, PSNI Child Internet Protection Team officers raided his home and seized multiple electronic devices.

Among these devices, Judge Ievers said, was one that contained approximately 1,797 illegal files, including 714 images and videos classified as Category A.

The descriptions of these images indicate that they feature very young children, including infants, and depict distress and pain.

After his arrest and interviews, Doak admitted to possessing the material but denied any sexual interest in children.

He explained that his own childhood trauma led him to research the topic, which then led him down a "rabbit hole" resulting in the possession of the illegal images.

Since the offences became known, Doak has undergone several counselling sessions and completed a recognized rehabilitation program.

The judge acknowledged his guilty pleas and said he showed "good victim insight," though this was balanced against the severity and number of images he possessed and shared.

Judge Ievers stated the case met the criteria for immediate detention, and she initially considered a 12-month sentence but also noted the legal requirement for an Enhanced Combination Order.

Given Doak's difficult personal history, remorse, victim awareness, limited prior record, and efforts to address his issues, she decided to impose the maximum ECO, which includes 100 hours of community service and a three-year probation period.

She warned that any breach or new offence would result in jail.

The ECO also requires Doak to reside at a designated address, restricts his internet access, prevents contact with any children, and mandates full disclosure of any new intimate relationships, including any convictions.

Finally, Judge Ievers declined to issue a Sexual Offences Prevention Order but ruled that Doak must register as a sex offender on the police register for five years.
