MAN SENTENCED FOR MURDERING HIS PARTNER

A man who murdered his partner following years of emotional abuse has received a life sentence in prison.

Clifton George, age 44, of Dumont Road, Hackney, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on June 9 to serve a minimum term of 23 years before being eligible for parole.

The verdict of guilty was delivered by a jury on June 3.

The victim, Annabel Rook, aged 46, was killed after being stabbed multiple times by George.

He then attempted to start a fire in their family home in Stoke Newington by causing a gas explosion.

Police arrived at the scene and quickly took George into custody, during which he confessed to the killing.

Authorities uncovered evidence of the abuse Annabel had suffered, including personal notes, hundreds of messages, and voice notes stored on her mobile device.

These materials shed light on the recent decline of their relationship and an escalation in George’s abusive conduct.

Both the Metropolitan Police and Annabel’s relatives are using this tragic event to draw attention to domestic abuse.

They urge victims or concerned individuals to report abuse to the police, emphasising that doing so can help prevent further tragedies.

On Tuesday, 17 June 2025, at approximately 04:57 hours, police responded to reports of a gas explosion at a residence, where a person was trapped inside.

Upon arrival, officers were assisted by the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade.

The explosion caused extensive damage to the property, making it initially inaccessible.

Inside, George was located in the backyard, bleeding heavily from cuts to his neck and arms while he attempted to harm himself.

Faced with a distressing scene, a responding police officer remained calm and proactive, staying with George and engaging in a sustained conversation as paramedics provided treatment.

Their composed and reassuring approach allowed George to share critical details about the incident.

He revealed that Annabel was inside the house but had died.

When questioned about how he knew she was dead, he responded, “because I killed her.” Following this confession, George was detained on suspicion of murder and transported to hospital.

Earlier, the couple had a heated argument which escalated into a violent assault.

George assaulted Annabel multiple times, including attempts to strangle her, and she was later found stabbed 22 times.

In the chaos that followed, George set fire to the property and ignited a gas canister, causing an explosion that damaged the home and awakened nearby residents.

Further investigation allowed officers to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the tragedy, revealing George’s history of abusive conduct towards Annabel and its influence on her.

Investigators reviewed extensive digital evidence, notably notes from Annabel stored on her phone and laptop, which served as a private outlet for her thoughts.

These sources provided insight into George’s volatile nature, his treatment of Annabel, and how his behaviour impacted her emotional state.

They also showed that her recent attempts to leave the relationship had provoked a marked escalation in George’s abusive actions.

On Sunday, 22 June 2025, George was formally charged with murder and arson with intent to endanger life, six days after his arrest.
