CLEMENT OMOREGBEE CONVICTED OF SERIAL RAPE IN LONDON'S SHOREDITCH AND GREENWICH

In a significant breakthrough for law enforcement in London, a man named Clement Omoregbee has been found guilty of committing multiple sexual assaults in the Shoreditch area, with his crimes spanning from February 2019 to December 2020.

The conviction follows a meticulous investigation by the Metropolitan Police, which utilized advanced DNA analysis to link Omoregbee to four separate rape incidents involving four different women.

Omoregbee, aged 37 and residing on Charlton Lane in Greenwich, was brought to justice after a five-week trial held at Wood Green Crown Court.

The court proceedings concluded on Wednesday, 14 June, with a jury finding him guilty of all charges.

The victims, none of whom knew each other, reported similar traumatic experiences during their assaults, which occurred as they were returning home after visiting various bars in the vibrant and bustling district of Shoreditch.

The women’s accounts detailed a pattern of predatory behavior, with each victim describing a frightening encounter where they were attacked after their nights out.

Throughout the investigation, a dedicated sexual offences investigation officer provided crucial support to the victims, guiding them through the complex legal process and ensuring their voices were heard in court.

Detectives initially obtained DNA evidence from one of the crime scenes, which proved to be a pivotal breakthrough.

This DNA was subsequently matched to Omoregbee, leading to the identification of him as the perpetrator of three of the four rapes.

Although two of the victims were initially hesitant to cooperate with the police, the new evidence prompted re-engagement, and they ultimately supported the investigation.

Following this development, the Metropolitan Police’s Complex Investigation Team (CIT), tasked with handling linked series of sexual offences, took over the case.

A manhunt was launched by officers from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, culminating in Omoregbee’s arrest near his residence on 21 April 2021.

During police interviews, Omoregbee denied any involvement in the rapes, but the evidence against him was overwhelming.

Further investigation revealed a fourth victim, who had sought support at The Havens, a London-based centre dedicated to assisting victims of sexual assault.

Initially, this victim was reluctant to cooperate, but detectives successfully contacted her and obtained her consent to analyze her forensic samples.

The results confirmed her assault was linked to Omoregbee through DNA evidence.

He refused to be interviewed regarding this particular incident, but the evidence was sufficient to charge him with a fourth count of rape in December 2021.

In addition to the sexual offences, detectives uncovered a pattern of theft and fraud committed by Omoregbee.

He was found guilty of stealing the victims’ phones, jewelry, and bank cards, and making unauthorized purchases using their stolen property.

These crimes occurred after the assaults, and he was convicted of six counts of fraud and theft.

His sentencing is scheduled for 29 September.

During the court hearing, Omoregbee displayed no remorse for his actions.

As the judge, Karim Ezzat, delivered the sentence, he condemned the offender’s lack of empathy, highlighting the lasting trauma inflicted on the victims.

The court sentenced Omoregbee to a minimum of 13 years and four months in prison, with the possibility of parole after that period.

Notably, Omoregbee showed defiance in court, erupting with profanity and anger when informed of his life sentence, demanding to be taken to the prison wing.

Judge Ezzat criticized Omoregbee for his callous attitude, emphasizing that his initial denials forced the victims to relive their ordeals through court testimony.

The trial revealed that Omoregbee often drugged his victims using GHB or GBL before assaulting them, and then stole their valuables.

All these offences were committed while he was already serving a 15-month suspended sentence for a burglary committed in November 2018, illustrating a disturbing pattern of criminal behavior.

Omoregbee’s arrest and subsequent conviction mark a significant victory for London’s police force and the victims seeking justice.

The case underscores the importance of forensic evidence and thorough investigation in bringing serial offenders to account, and serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing fight against sexual violence in the city.
