CLAYTON BEARD: WALSALL DOG FIGHTER SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY AND ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES

Clayton Paul Beard, a man notorious in Walsall for his involvement in illegal dog fighting activities, was brought to justice following a series of disturbing discoveries made by the RSPCA in 2007.

At that time, Beard was residing at The Beeches, Prospect Way, Birchills, Walsall WS2 7FD, but he was previously known to live on Cannon Street, Ryecroft, Walsall.

Authorities raided Beard’s residence after receiving credible information about his involvement in animal cruelty and illegal dog fighting.

During the inspection, RSPCA inspectors uncovered a disturbing scene: Beard was found in possession of three dogs, which were later identified as two male and one female pit bulls.

The condition of these animals was appalling, with one dog, named Lee, suffering from an astonishing 70 wounds, while the other two dogs had 35 and 24 wounds respectively.

The injuries indicated prolonged suffering, and the evidence suggested these animals had been subjected to brutal training routines designed for fighting.

Further investigation revealed the presence of a treadmill and other equipment at Beard’s home, which was used to force the dogs through a rigorous and cruel daily training regimen.

Additionally, inspectors discovered a makeshift veterinary kit, which included superglue used to seal wounds inflicted during fights, highlighting the extent of the cruelty involved.

The court heard that Beard had been actively involved in treating the dogs’ injuries in a manner that aimed to keep them fighting, rather than seeking proper veterinary care.

As a result of these findings, magistrates ordered the immediate destruction of two of the dogs, recognizing the danger and cruelty associated with their continued existence.

This case marked a significant milestone as it was the first prosecution under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 related to dog fighting, according to the RSPCA.

Magistrate Michael Kearns emphasized the severity of the offense, stating that a custodial sentence was
