TRAGIC CASE OF CHRISTOPHER AND CARLY EASEY: BABY ELEANOR'S FATAL INJURIES IN NORWICH AND ELY

In April 2022, a heartbreaking case unfolded at Norwich Crown Court involving the tragic death of a three-month-old baby girl named Eleanor, who suffered catastrophic injuries leading to her untimely demise.

The proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of neglect and inflicted harm by her father, Christopher Easey, 31, and the circumstances surrounding her mother, Carly Easey, 36, who was also implicated in the case.

Christopher Easey was convicted of manslaughter and neglect after a lengthy trial that lasted over ten weeks.

The court heard that Eleanor, who was only 14 weeks old at the time of her death, endured severe physical trauma, including extensive bleeding in her brain, neurological damage, and multiple fractures.

Specifically, she suffered 31 rib fractures, with 17 on the front and 14 on the back, along with five other fractures in her limbs.

These injuries were determined to have occurred at different times, indicating ongoing abuse rather than accidental harm.

Judge Mr.

Justice Murray delivered a stern sentence of 14 years in prison to Christopher Easey, emphasizing that despite his lack of experience and maturity as a father, he was clearly aware of the harm he was causing.

The judge stated, "You must have known what you were doing was harming Eleanor.

It must have been obvious to you there was a risk of really serious physical harm to her." The court also noted that the injuries could not be explained by normal or even rough handling, pointing to inflicted trauma as the cause.

During the trial, the jury was informed that Christopher Easey was responsible for the injuries that ultimately led to Eleanor's death.

The prosecution argued that her death resulted from a deliberate non-accidental injury, involving shaking and possibly an impact to the right side of her head.

Christopher's account, claiming that the injuries occurred after a 'resuscitative shake,' was dismissed as false by the court.

Meanwhile, Carly Easey, who was present at the trial, was found not guilty of allowing her daughter's death but was convicted of neglect.

She was sentenced to a 12-month community order.

The court accepted that Carly was unaware of her husband's harmful actions and had not intentionally contributed to Eleanor's injuries.

She was living at Elizabeth Drive, Cherdburgh, and was also involved in giving Eleanor diluted squash, which the judge described as evidence that something was seriously wrong with her feeding.

Both defendants had denied all charges initially, but the jury found Christopher guilty of manslaughter and neglect, while Carly was guilty of neglect.

The court heard that both had given Eleanor diluted squash and that there was a clear indication that she was in a severely malnourished state at the time of her death.

The post-mortem revealed she was a poorly-nourished child, and her care was marked by neglect, including leaving her alone for extended periods and failing to provide proper nutrition.

Medical experts testified that Eleanor's injuries were indicative of inflicted trauma, with some injuries occurring at different times, suggesting ongoing abuse.

The prosecution highlighted that Eleanor's death was caused by a combination of shaking and impact, with Christopher Easey being responsible for the earlier injuries and ultimately her death.

The court also heard that Eleanor was particularly vulnerable due to her premature birth and small size, making her more susceptible to harm.

Sally Howes QC, prosecuting, emphasized the history of violence and abuse, noting that Eleanor was a victim of prolonged neglect and physical harm.

She pointed out that the defendant's subsequent accounts were fabricated to cover up the truth.

The case underscored the tragic consequences of neglect and inflicted injury on a fragile infant, with the court condemning the actions of both parents involved in Eleanor's death.
