VILLAGE SHOPKEEPER GROOMED CHILDREN WITH FREE SWEETS BEFORE RAPING THEM

A shop assistant convicted of being a paedophile, who enticed young children with free sweets, cigarettes, and alcohol, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Christopher White, 37, was employed at a store in Layer De Haye, a village near Colchester in Essex, from 2007 to 2009.

At the time, he was in his twenties and exploited his role as a shopkeeper to build trust with girls under 13, whom he then sexually abused.

The investigation began in 2019 after some of White’s victims reported their assaults to Essex Police.

Residing on Mill Lane in Birch, White was charged with multiple offences, including two counts of child rape under 13, one count of sexual assault of a child under 13, one count of sexual assault of a child over 13, two counts of sexual activity with a child under 13, and one count of sexual activity with a child over 13.

He was handed a 14-year prison sentence, with a minimum of nine years and four months to be served before he becomes eligible for parole.

One of the victims shared that they felt unloved and devastated during adolescence, noting, "It never made sense back then," and emphasized, "It wasn’t until I reported to the police that I discovered I was never in the wrong." Addressing White directly, the victim stated: "You made me endure a year of waiting for a trial and then a two-week court process because you could not admit to the abuse you made me suffer.

Now, as an adult, understanding the severity and reality of what you did and how you robbed me of my childhood — knowing it was in no way my fault — has been incredibly difficult." Another victim remarked: "Just because we have justice doesn’t mean it’s forgotten.

I have to live with this the rest of my life; it’s etched into who I am." Judge Mary Loram KC commented that the impact on the victims’ lives remains deeply tragic.

She remarked: "It is tempting to call you pathetic, but that would be wrong.

You are manipulative, totally self-centred, and unaware of how other men feel." Detective Inspector James Hardingham added: "Throughout this investigation, the victims have shown remarkable bravery in coming forward and enduring the court process.

The pain and trauma they experienced in childhood will stay with them and their families forever.

We want the public to feel confident in reporting such incidents to police, even if they fear they won’t be believed or that justice won’t be served.

Hopefully, this sentence underscores the seriousness with which law enforcement treats these allegations and that justice can be achieved."
