Maryport Rapist
In June 2009, a man from Cumbria named Christopher Templeman was sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison for filming himself raping a 12-year-old girl. The evidence against him included his own collection of homemade pornographic videos, which played a crucial role in securing his conviction after police investigated his relationship with the young girl from West Cumbria.

At Carlisle Crown Court, a judge described the case as 'really serious' and highlighted an aggravating factor. Templeman, 21, of Senhouse Street, Maryport, had previously been found guilty after a trial of five charges of rape, establishing that the girl, aged 12 at the time, was too young to give legal consent to sexual activity. He was also convicted of sexual activity with her when she was 13, along with five counts of making indecent images.

He was sentenced to be on the sex offenders register for life and received an indefinite prison sentence, meaning he must serve at least five years before being eligible for parole. The judge, Hon Mr Justice Irwin, explained, 'That minimum period does not mean you will be released at the end of five years. It is only at that point that you can be considered for release.'

During the trial, it was revealed that at one point, the girl had lied to authorities in an attempt to shield Templeman from trouble. The judge commented that this was merely a reflection of how controlling he had been. 'At her age, she should still have been a long way from a full sexual life, but she was engaging in a full and practiced sexual life with you. This was destructive and very sad for her.'

Furthermore, the judge noted that Templeman did not deserve leniency for pleading guilty, asserting that he had caused the girl to endure humiliation and anxiety by having her testify in court.
