GOSPORT MAN CHRISTOPHER MESSER CAUGHT VIEWING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN SHOCKING CASE
In January 2020, a disturbing case unfolded at Portsmouth Crown Court involving Christopher Messer, a 35-year-old man from Gosport, who was publicly shamed for his involvement in viewing and distributing child abuse images. Messer, a married father of four, was found to have engaged in the disturbing online activity that included images of young children being sexually exploited. He appeared before the court to admit to serious charges related to his online behavior. The court heard that Messer had accessed and viewed indecent images of children, some as young as one year old, and others aged between five and twelve. The images also depicted girls aged 10 to 14, with a particular focus on their sexual exploitation. Among the most heinous images was one showing a six-year-old girl being raped, which Messer had entered into a chat room to trade and share with others.
Recorder Sarah Vaughan-Jones QC addressed the court, stating, “The images included a six-year-old being raped after you entered a chat room and became involved in the trading of images.” She emphasized that the repeated viewing of such material demonstrated a clear sexual interest in children, which is a serious concern. The court noted that such viewing not only reflects a disturbing attraction but also fuels the market for child exploitation, potentially encouraging further abuse.
Despite the gravity of his actions, Messer was spared a custodial sentence. Instead, he was sentenced to a two-year community order, which includes 35 days of rehabilitation activities aimed at addressing his behavior. Additionally, he was issued a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect for five years. The court decided not to impose any costs on Messer, reflecting the severity of the case and the need for ongoing monitoring and intervention.
Throughout the proceedings, the court highlighted the dangers posed by individuals like Messer, whose online activities contribute to the ongoing cycle of child abuse and exploitation. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need for strict legal measures to combat such heinous crimes.
