CHRISTOPHER LAING FROM RENFREWSHIRE SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN TEESSIDE

A man who has been described by a judge as “every parent’s worst nightmare” has received a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of multiple heinous online sexual offences involving minors.

Christopher Laing, aged 38, from Renfrewshire, was found guilty at Teesside Crown Court of a series of serious crimes that included possession of a significant number of indecent images of children, as well as actively engaging in sexual communication with underage girls.

Laing’s criminal activities came to light after police investigations revealed that he possessed 67 images classified as category C, depicting children in sexual contexts.

Additionally, he was charged with eight counts of creating indecent images of children, further highlighting the extent of his illegal activities.

The court also heard that Laing had caused or incited girls aged between 13 and 15 into engaging in sexual acts, and had communicated sexually with minors through electronic means.

He was also found guilty of attempting to meet a child after grooming her online, an act that underscores the predatory nature of his conduct.

Initially, Laing was bailed by Police Scotland after authorities discovered him in possession of indecent images involving two 14-year-old girls from the Cleveland Police jurisdiction.

However, his criminal pursuits did not cease, and in June 2023, Cleveland Police arrested him once again.

This arrest followed Laing’s attempt to travel from his home in Renfrewshire to the Cleveland area with the intent to meet a 15-year-old girl he had been communicating with sexually online.

Evidence showed that Laing had sent photographs of himself traveling on a train to Teesside, indicating his plans to meet the girl.

He had also booked a hotel in the vicinity, further demonstrating his intent.

The girl’s parents, upon learning of Laing’s travel plans, alerted the authorities.

Police officers intercepted Laing at the train station as his train arrived, leading to his immediate arrest.

During the investigation, police seized Laing’s mobile phone, which was later examined in forensic detail.

The analysis revealed that Laing had been in contact with multiple teenage girls across the country, attempting to manipulate them into sending him indecent images in exchange for money and gifts.

When the girls refused his demands, Laing resorted to threats, including threats of rape, to coerce compliance.

Police found evidence on his laptop indicating that he had researched the addresses of his victims, demonstrating premeditation and a disturbing level of planning.

Victim impact statements read aloud in court painted a grim picture of the emotional toll inflicted by Laing’s actions.

One teenage girl expressed her ongoing fear, stating she no longer felt safe and was haunted daily by the memory of Laing’s messages.

Her mental health had deteriorated significantly as a result of the harassment.

Another victim described how her confidence had been shattered, and she now feared attending school, worried that her peers might learn about the messages Laing had sent her.

The court heard that Laing’s actions had caused profound psychological harm to his victims, and the bravery of those who came forward was commended by Judge Carroll.

During sentencing, the judge expressed grave concern over Laing’s use of threats of rape to manipulate and control his victims, emphasizing the danger he posed to children and the community.

Laing was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison, with a minimum of five years before he becomes eligible for parole.

Additionally, he received a concurrent sentence of one year and eight months for possession of indecent images and sexual communication offences.

Laing was also subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, restricting his access to internet-enabled devices and allowing police to examine any devices he acquires.

Furthermore, he is required to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life upon his release from prison, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and preventing further harm.
