CHRISTOPHER HARVEY'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN YORK: PAEDOPHILE SENTENCED TO 8 YEARS FOR ABUSE
In a deeply disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of York, Christopher Harvey, a 30-year-old man from Rowntree Avenue, Clifton, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of multiple counts of child sexual abuse. The crimes, which spanned several years, involved the abuse of a young girl beginning when she was just five years old, and continued with alarming regularity for a period of five years, leaving lasting scars on her life.
During the sentencing hearing at York Crown Court, Judge Paul Batty QC described the abuse as 'disgusting' and emphasized the profound impact it had on the victim.
The judge noted that the victim, now an adult, had provided a harrowing victim impact statement that vividly illustrated the trauma she endured.
He stated, “The effect on her was profound.
Her victim impact statement makes harrowing reading.” Judge Batty further explained that Harvey’s actions had essentially blighted the girl’s childhood, with the frequency of the abuse leaving her feeling isolated and without support.
The court heard that her mother, instead of supporting her, had taken Harvey’s side during the ordeal, compounding her sense of betrayal.
The judge remarked, “It’s perfectly plain that you blighted her young life with the frequency of what you were doing to her.
She had no one to turn to.” In addition to the prison sentence, Harvey was ordered to serve half of the eight-year term before being eligible for parole.
He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
The court’s decision was influenced by the fact that the last of Harvey’s offenses occurred approximately 12 years ago, and mitigation was considered because he was under 18 at the time of some of the assaults.
His defense lawyer, Alex Menary, argued for a reduction in sentence, citing his age at the time of the offenses and requesting a 25 percent reduction.
Harvey’s conviction followed a five-day trial in which a jury unanimously found him guilty of three counts of indecent assault and convicted him by majority verdict of a fourth indecent assault.
The charges stemmed from incidents that took place in the early 2000s.
During the trial, the prosecution, led by Ian Howard, revealed that the young girl had confided in her mother about Harvey’s sexual attacks.
Despite her disclosure, the attacks persisted, and she believed her mother would speak to Harvey, which she felt was a mistake as the abuse continued unchecked.
The girl eventually confided in another relative, and with their support, she was able to reach out to the NSPCC and later to the police, after a period of several years.
The court also heard that Harvey denied any improper behavior towards the girl and claimed he was never alone with her at her home.
He worked in the car parts industry and was arrested at his workplace on Clifton Moor.
The prosecution highlighted the devastating impact of the allegations on Harvey, noting that he lost his job as a result of the case.
Throughout the trial, Harvey was on bail but was remanded into custody following his conviction.
His sentencing is scheduled for May 18, and the court will determine the final length of his imprisonment at that time.
