CHRISTOPHER DAVIES FROM PORTHCAWL SENTENCED TO 20 MONTHS FOR GROOMING TWO 15-YEAR-OLDS IN PORTHCAWL

In a serious case that has shocked the community of Porthcawl, a 30-year-old man named Christopher Davies has been sentenced to 20 months in prison at Cardiff Crown Court for engaging in inappropriate and illegal conduct involving two minors. The incident revolves around Davies' repeated breaches of a court order that explicitly prohibited him from having any contact with children under the age of 16, a restriction that he knowingly violated.

According to court reports, Davies took a girl and a boy, both aged 15, to his residence located in Lake View Close, Porthcawl. It was at his home that he allegedly engaged in grooming behaviors, which the judge described as highly inappropriate and indicative of predatory intent. Judge Huw Davies QC emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "A man of 30 does not strike up friendships with 15-year-olds and invite them to his flat for an innocent reason. He was grooming them."

Davies pleaded guilty to two charges of breaching a sexual offences prevention order that had been imposed on him in January 2011. This order was a consequence of a previous, extensive criminal history, which included a sentence of three years and four months for 17 separate offences. These offences ranged from rape and serious sexual assault to indecent acts and acts of gross indecency involving both boys and girls. The crimes he committed in his youth, involving children aged between six and ten, only came to light years later, revealing a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.

Prosecutor David Pinnell explained that the court order prohibited Davies from having custody, care, or contact with any child under 16 unless such contact was supervised by social services. Despite this, Davies continued to pursue interactions with minors. In this case, the mother of the boy was unaware of Davies’ criminal background when her son reportedly met a "new friend" at Porthcawl public library. Sometime after this meeting, the boy ran away from home, prompting police investigations.

During police interviews, the boy confirmed that he had visited Davies’ flat on six occasions along with the girl. They spent time playing computer games, and on some occasions, they shared a cannabis joint. Importantly, the boy was always accompanied by the girl and was never alone with Davies. When questioned, Davies denied supplying cannabis to the children, claiming that they had brought the drug themselves. He insisted there was no malicious intent behind his interactions with the minors.

However, Judge Huw Davies QC was not convinced by Davies’ claims. The judge remarked, "The use of cannabis was a sinister element, and he was in the early stages of a grooming process." The seriousness of Davies’ actions was underscored by the fact that he had repeatedly violated the court order, which was meant to protect children from individuals like him. The judge also noted that the case was particularly disturbing to the parents of the children involved.

In sentencing, Davies’ solicitor, Rhodri Chudleigh, acknowledged the need for immediate custody, reflecting the severity of his breaches and conduct. The court also disqualified Davies from working with children for life, and the existing court order was made indefinite, ensuring ongoing restrictions on his contact with minors. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals with a history of sexual offenses and the importance of strict enforcement of court orders designed to safeguard vulnerable children.
