EXETER MAN CHRISTOPHER COMBER SENTENCED FOR VIOLENT THREATS AND DOMESTIC ABUSE IN EXETER
In a recent court hearing at Exeter Crown Court, Christopher Comber, a 32-year-old resident of Hoker Road in Exeter, was found guilty of a series of violent threats and abusive behavior directed towards his former partner. The incidents, which took place over an 11-day period spanning November and December of the previous year, highlighted a disturbing pattern of control, jealousy, and aggression that had persisted in their relationship.
Prosecutor Ms.
Felicity Payne detailed the troubling history between Comber and his ex-partner, emphasizing that their relationship was marred by frequent episodes of belittlement and invasive behavior, such as checking her phone, often while he was intoxicated.
The court was informed that Comber had a prior conviction in 2019 for physically assaulting her, which resulted in a suspended sentence.
The assault left the victim permanently injured, rendering her blind in one eye, a testament to the severity of the violence she endured.
By December 2020, the woman had clearly communicated to Comber that their relationship was over.
However, this declaration triggered a violent and threatening response from him.
During this period, Comber's behavior escalated, culminating in him storming into a hairdresser's salon where his abusive and threatening conduct was on full display.
He accused her of getting a haircut to meet other men and behaved in a jealous and controlling manner, further fueling the tension between them.
The situation worsened after the victim disclosed that she was seeing someone else.
Comber responded with a barrage of threatening messages, some of which included a particularly menacing threat stating he would 'leave her jaw hanging from her face.' Other messages contained references to sexual abuse, adding a deeply disturbing dimension to his threats.
The victim later provided a statement describing her growing fear and anxiety, revealing that she tried to maintain a brave front for her acquaintances but increasingly felt frightened and uncertain about what he might do next.
Her fear extended to her daily life, making her hesitant to go out and anxious about potential encounters with him.
Comber's criminal record is extensive, with 12 previous convictions, including offenses related to malicious communications and domestic violence.
The court was told that his history demonstrated a pattern of abusive and controlling behavior, with no indication that his actions were provoked.
Judge David Evans addressed Comber's conduct, condemning his 'absurdly disproportionate reactions' and emphasizing that his previous convictions underscored his propensity for violence and abuse.
The judge rejected any suggestion that Comber's actions were a result of provocation, highlighting the seriousness of his behavior.
As a result of his convictions, Comber was sentenced to 12 months in prison.
Additionally, he was issued a restraining order that prohibits him from contacting the victim for a period of 10 years, aiming to protect her from further harm and ensure her safety moving forward.
