CHRISTOPHER CAPEL FROM OXFORD SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES
In May 2017, a disturbing case unfolded involving Christopher Capel, a former employee of Oxford's healthcare sector, who was found guilty of possessing a significant collection of indecent images depicting children.The incident drew considerable attention due to the nature of the crimes and the location involved, highlighting the ongoing issues of child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement.
Capel, aged 34, had previously worked in an administrative role at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
He resigned from his position the day before he appeared in Oxford Crown Court to face sentencing before Judge Ian Pringle QC.
Despite his resignation, Capel was still listed as a staff member on the hospital trust’s official website at the time of his arrest and court appearance.
The court proceedings revealed that Capel had been actively searching online for hundreds of images of abused children.
During the hearing, the judge emphasized the severity of such offenses, stating, “Anyone who thinks there is no victim in these crimes is totally deluding themselves.
These are real children, real children put through real hell.
The courts regard these offences as extremely serious.” The judge acknowledged that Capel appeared to be a caring individual in his everyday life but warned him that this was a critical opportunity to prevent future offending.
Law enforcement authorities suspected Capel’s involvement after linking an IP address to his home on Yarnells Road in Oxford.
When police executed a search warrant at his residence, Capel was heard confessing to his wife, “I have been arrested for accessing images and downloading images, it’s bad stuff.
I did not think it was real, I did not think it was that easy to find.” Prosecutor Julian Lynch detailed the extent of Capel’s illegal activities, revealing that he was found in possession of 465 images of children being exploited, along with two videos and two extreme pornographic images.
The court noted that Capel appeared to be in shock during the proceedings, underscoring the gravity of his actions.
Judge Pringle sentenced Capel to a two-year community order, which includes a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement and 180 hours of unpaid work.
Additionally, the court ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the computer equipment seized during the investigation.
Capel was also issued a sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future conduct.
However, the judge declined to order Capel to pay the prosecution’s costs of £1,200, citing his recent job loss as a mitigating factor.
Capel was also required to pay a victim surcharge.
He admitted to multiple charges, including making an indecent photograph of a child, possessing an extreme pornographic image, making a prohibited image of a child, and possessing an indecent photograph of a child for show, all on April 28 of the previous year.
