CHRISTOPHER BROOKS AND SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENSES IN LANCASHIRE
On February 22, 2020, Christopher Brooks, a man from Church Street, Ribchester, was involved in a disturbing incident that would lead to a serious criminal trial.Brooks is accused of engaging in inappropriate and illegal sexual activity with a then 15-year-old girl.
According to court proceedings, Brooks had allegedly given the young girl vodka to drink, which is a significant detail given her age and the nature of the allegations.
Following this, he reportedly kissed her on the lips and groped her, actions that constitute serious sexual misconduct.
The victim, whose identity is protected by law, reported the assault to the police, initiating an investigation that would eventually lead to Brooks’s arrest and trial.
Despite the allegations, Brooks, who resides in Ribchester, denied any wrongdoing and chose to contest the charges in court.
His decision to go to trial meant that the case was thoroughly examined by a jury, which, in July, found him guilty of three counts of sexual activity with a child.
The verdict was a result of careful consideration of the evidence presented during the trial.
During the sentencing hearing held on September 13, the victim bravely took the stand to deliver a heartfelt impact statement.
She expressed how profoundly the incident had affected her life, stating that her ability to concentrate at school had been severely compromised.
Her academic performance, particularly in her GCSEs, had suffered as a direct consequence of the trauma she endured.
Her mother also addressed the court, describing the past three and a half years as a continuous struggle.
She expressed her hope that, with the conclusion of this case, Brooks would no longer have the opportunity to harm another child.
Judge Darren Preston presided over the case and delivered the sentencing.
He noted that Brooks, now 34, had no prior criminal convictions aside from an old driving offence.
The judge also highlighted Brooks’s persistent denial of the allegations, even suggesting during the trial that he had been set up.
The judge remarked, “He continues to find new ways to deny the offences, and claimed during the course of the trial that this had been a set up.
When you were arrested you denied the allegations, but your DNA was found on the inside of the victim’s bra.
You then came up with offensive theories as to how the DNA came to be inside her bra – anything to avoid the truth of what happened that night, which is that you were guilty of the attack.” In mitigation, Brooks’s legal representative, Kathryn Johnson, argued that her client had approached the court with a realistic attitude and requested the shortest possible sentence.
She emphasized that Brooks had once been a professional rugby player before injuries ended his sports career.
Johnson also pointed out that Brooks had references attesting to his good character and described the incident as an isolated event.
Ultimately, the court sentenced Christopher Brooks to three and a half years in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, a measure intended to protect the community from potential future harm.
The case has left a lasting impact on the victim and her family, who hope that justice has been served and that such a tragedy will not happen again in Lancashire.
