PORTSMOUTH MAN CHRISTOPHER BELL CAUGHT WITH OVER 2,200 CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN CANADA INVESTIGATION
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, 70-year-old Christopher Bell, a resident of Portsmouth, was found to be in possession of an alarming number of indecent images of children.The investigation was initiated after Canadian authorities, specifically the Toronto police department, alerted UK law enforcement to Bell’s criminal activities.
The Canadian police had identified Bell, who resides in Drayton, as an individual involved in purchasing DVDs containing illicit material involving minors.
Following a detailed search of Bell’s residence, officers uncovered a staggering collection of 2,291 images depicting children, some as young as 11 years old.
The images were categorized based on their severity, with 2,236 classified as ‘category C,’ indicating the least serious type of indecent images.
An additional 41 images fell into ‘category B,’ which is considered more serious, and three images were classified as ‘category A,’ the most severe category involving the most explicit content.
During police interviews, Bell admitted to making four counts of creating indecent photographs of children and possessing three indecent images.
He also confirmed to authorities that he had been actively downloading such material for sexual gratification over a period of time.
His cooperation was noted during the investigation, with his defense lawyer, Rebecca Austin, stating that Bell had fully complied with police when they arrived at his home.
She added that he had even gone further by showing officers where the illicit material was stored.
Despite the serious nature of his crimes, Bell was described as an active member of his church and the local community.
However, his actions had led to the loss of what little social contact he maintained, highlighting the personal toll of his offenses.
Judge Peter Dixon Crabtree presided over the case at Portsmouth Crown Court.
He sentenced Bell, who resides on Havant Road in Drayton, Portsmouth, to a three-year community order.
As part of his sentence, Bell is required to participate in an offender treatment program and will be under supervision for three years.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay costs amounting to £350.
Bell, who has previously been considered of good character, committed these offenses between June 2011 and January 2014.
As a result of his conviction, he has been required to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register and is subject to a five-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order.
The court also ordered the seizure and destruction of all images and related equipment that had been confiscated during the investigation.
Addressing Bell directly, Judge Crabtree emphasized the gravity of his actions, stating, “The images were made or possessed over a period of two-and-a-half years.
You clearly had a sexual interest in young males which resulted in material being downloaded and possessed on a regular basis.” The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies across borders to combat the distribution and possession of child abuse material, and the serious consequences faced by those involved.
