FROME MAN CHRISTOPHER BATE SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND ONLINE CHAT SCANDAL
In a disturbing case brought before Bristol Crown Court in February 2020, Christopher Bate, a resident of Frome, was found guilty of possessing and distributing extremely disturbing child abuse images. The court heard that Bate, aged 67, who was married and had children and grandchildren, had fallen into the dark world of online child exploitation following his separation from his wife. The investigation was initiated after Avon and Somerset police received intelligence indicating Bate’s involvement in the possession and sharing of illegal images. Authorities acted swiftly, leading to a search of his residence on St John’s Road in Frome, where they uncovered a trove of illicit material. Bate pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including distributing a Category A child abuse image between September 2013 and November 2018. He also admitted to possessing images across Category A, B, and C classifications, along with an extreme pornographic image.
The police found a total of 2,976 images and 879 videos, with the most serious Category A material being particularly disturbing. Prosecutor Nicholas Fridd detailed that Bate had accessed uploads of child abuse movies, prompting police to arrange a meeting with him. During the investigation, officers discovered child abuse images on his computer tower and an additional image on his mobile phone.
Further examination of Bate’s online activity revealed that he had visited websites where he expressed a preference for “fit men and boys” and even indicated a desire to sexually abuse a five-year-old boy. The court was informed that his collection included images depicting babies and young boys being raped, highlighting the severity and depravity of his actions.
Judge Paul Cook sentenced Bate to 28 months in prison. Addressing the court, the judge described the images as “sickening and horrifying,” emphasizing that they demonstrated a focus on the most extreme forms of abuse involving very young children. The judge also noted that Bate had engaged in communication with other paedophiles, sharing movies and images, with conversations that could only be described as depraved.
In addition to his prison sentence, Bate was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same duration. His computer devices were confiscated and forfeited as part of the proceedings, underscoring the seriousness of his crimes and the ongoing efforts to prevent further harm.
